Dean Evason Needs to be held Accountable for Another First Round Playoff Exit

On today’s episode of Locked on Wild, we react to another first round exit this time to the Dallas Stars. We look at the parallels between last year and this year, with special teams being awful again and the team not showing up with the season on the line. We discuss the lack of adjustments made with the lineup as the series unfolded. We look at what Bill Guerin did to supplement the roster for two straight years, only to see things unfold in an eerily similar manner. We examine the comments Rick Bowness made after the Winnipeg Jets were eliminated compared to what Dean said after Game 6. We also discuss why it is important for Bill Guerin to make moves to signify that this result, for a second consecutive season, and a seventh postseason overall, is unacceptable.

  1. Dean is in waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay over his head..He needs to go….Its on Billy G now to say goodbye to Dean.

  2. The Wild outplayed the Stars for most of the first 4 games, but seemingly led by the coach, let themselves get into a victim mentality. I thought the Wild would take the series to 7, if not win it, but rather than adjusting and seeing players step up, they seemed to just reject accountably and blamed everyone else.

We saw something similar with McKinnon's bad showing on the lack of tripping call (arguably incidental contact), but he essentially stopped playing and Seattle ended up scoring.

The coach cannot feed that mentality, if a team wants to go deep.

  3. I don’t necessarily disagree with your take and we did have the capability of taking them 7 games but (in my view now) losing Mason Shaw and Erickson Ek was the just to much for a team that really lacked depth in scoring. We didn’t have the defensive forwards to keep Dallas in check. We just didn’t have the depth of player and especially coaching. I felt after last year Dean wasn’t ready for prime time as a playoff coach and that’s before I found out about his lack of success through his whole career in the playoffs at all levels. You hate to say he’ll never get it figured out but maybe it’s not intellectual with Dean but emotional. He may get so worked up inside his head he can’t think straight in big moments. I think Bill Guerin is quite aware of it and it’s possible the owner and the GM being strapped with Parise and Suter’s contract made a calculated move to not sweat it if they don’t go anywhere in the playoffs for one more season after this one. My take could be total balderdash but I keep and eye on the their books and wiggle room they ain’t got. The farm system was in shambles for a few years also but because of what Billy Guerin has done it’s the best farm system in the league meaning in my humblest of opinions that those kids down in Iowa are about to pay dividends in the next couple years not to mention we have two more drafts 23’ and 24’ then 25’ we exorcise the contract demons of Parise and Suter. I still believe it’s likely one more subpar playoff year is in the making unless and I say unless the kids and Brock Faber are ready to take that next step. I feel your frustration can’t tell you how many things both the old north stars and Wild caused me to smash and break. Good luck to you and keep it chill but if you can’t buy a blackboard and reenact the Carl Eller locker room tantrum (think it was Eller) when he smashed to pieces the blackboard and The Vikings owned the second half of that game (I think out of fear 🤣).

  4. We need to mix physical play with skill play every year we do this through the season we sellout for skill and than come to trade deadline and kaprizov gets pushed around all season we sell out for the delo guy who just there to smash people and offers no goal support or defensive support we need players that can snipe the pretty goals and play that fast pace game but also can very comfortably play the ground and pound game and just grind out a win and we need to win face offs I mean our pp and PK Will always suck if we chase the puck all the time you can’t score with out the puck and you can’t stop another team scoring with out the puck Ryan oriely would have been great for us to help in that department

  5. I coached hockey, and I am amazed that I see the same mistakes made at every level, Dean wants his players to play his style, but coaches like him become stubborn, and never change anything, sometimes you have to coach the style best for the players you have. I think Dean has a terrible problem putting physical players with skilled players, stubborn coaches fail far more than coaches that adjust for the situation. Dean has only won one first round of playoffs and that was at juniors.

  6. A new team also, it's ironic the The North Stars who moved to Texas and became The Dallas Stars are winning, what is it in this state that we have consistently mediocre teams.
We all need to get together and celebrate all our losing teams, year by year including naming people and how they choked in a game or series, it could be an annual event.
Maybe sports personal being ridiculed might light a fire under their ASSES and be an incentive to work harder, or else we let the world know

  7. Can we say Andre brunette as I have been saying for months
The best coach I've seen in sixty years of Hockey is Al Arbor he took what the players offered and made it work
Evason refusal to do any adjustments
Especially with the kids is his downfall

  8. He's not the best head coach in the league but its a team with huge cap issues and players like Zuccerello and Middleton in tier one roles. I mean come on.

  9. Just like a real minnestoan look for a scape goat. This team just wasn't good enough. Dallas had great sticks and we just didn't have the talent to defend it. The only change I can see is the addition of some better centers. No coaching would have helped.

  10. I've been saying it since last years playoff loss we have NO COACHING AND PLAYER LEADERSHIP there was no excess last year to come out flat in game 4 and this year there was alot of playing flat in every game. What i'd like to see is these players traded Zuccarello [no trade] 6 million 37 yrs old Foligno 3.1 million 33 yrs old merrell 1.2 million 32 yrs old goose 2 million 38 yrs old thats 12.3 million cap savings i would add Spurgeon 34 yrs old 7.575 million and he has 4 more yrs at that. Thats 20 million cap space also pittsburgh wants to trade minny boy Guentzel 1 yr left at 6 million we would have money to sign him long term We need to get great players in here or were going to lose Krill.

  11. As much as it hurts, they at least got a little more playoff experience under the belts of players like kaprizov and boldy. Faber has shown what he will become too so not all bad. This is a team that can make the playoffs but won't go deep even if they get out of round 1. Dont forget this team will get better once the dead cap is gone and some of those younger players like addison get a bit older and experienced. Let the young guys have fun without too much pressure when you know they aren't hoisting a cup this year. Come back in 2 to 3 years and that experience may come in clutch, those star players won't want to see an early exit again.

  12. The Wild need to accumulate some serious talent through the draft and free agency to start hanging with these playoff teams. We have one superstar. Dallas has 5 point per game caliber players and a top 5 goalie. It's no shock that they won the series.

  13. coach Dean's playoff record

2020 play in round vs Vancouver
    Game 1: won 3-0
    Game 2: lost 4-3
    Game 3: lost 3-0
    Game 4: lost 4-3 OT

    2021 Playoffs vs Golden Knights
    Game 1: won 1-0 OT
    Game 2: lost 3-1
    Game 3: lost 5-2
    Game 4: lost 4-0
    Game 5: won 4-2
    Game 6: won 3-0
    Game 7: lost 6-2

    2022 Playoffs vs Blues
    Game 1: lost 4-0
    Game 2: won 6-2
    Game 3: won 5-1
    Game 4: lost 5-2
    Game 5: lost 5-2
    Game 6: lost 5-1

    2023 playoffs vs Stars
    Game 1: won 3-2 OT
    Game 2: lost 7-3
    Game 3: won 5-1
    Game 4: lost 3-2
    Game 5: lost 4-0
    Game 6: lost 4-1

Notice something? In each series there is a three game losing streak after taking a series lead. Not only that, but the losses in those streaks are blowouts. Dean Evason is the visual representative of the old saying "a shining deer". Time to move on from him.

Hell look at his coaching history.

    WHL best of 7 games
    2000 0-4
    2001 0-4
    2002 0-4
    2003 2-4
    2004 1-4
2005 7-4 lost in second round

    AHL best of 5 games
    2013 1-3
    2014 0-3
    2016 0-3
    2017 0-3

    He's awful.

  14. I just watched boston and florida game 7 and the wild couldnt have thrown towels or brought gatorade to either of those teams. the wild pk and pp were non existent.

  15. The team seems to lack hockey I.Q. How many times do you see the opposing team get to where the puck is going before a Wild player gets there? Seems like a constant theme with this team.

  16. DeBoer just out coached him. He said if you want to play like that, then we'll make them pay. He should've changed his lines and style but I think the end results would be the same. Dallas Stats are a justatable team
