Eugene Melnyk confirmed to the media that the Ottawa Senators will not trade the 3rd and 5th overall draft picks at the 2020 NHL Entry Draft for the 1st overall pick, citing the idea as “nonsensical.” This comes off of speculation and rumours as to what the Senators would do at the draft, citing an opportunity to trade up to the New York Rangers’ 1st overall pick and the chance at selecting Alexis Lafreniere.

Great.
So are u gonna talk about the Canucks soon?
They need to trade for this pic I want to see this kid be a draft bust and I want to see him out of the damn League I don't like his attitude you should be thankful to be even in the NHL and I hope he gets traded to the Senators
Remember me from couple steams ago
its more value to have 2 future stars then 1 super star imo
Honestly, I'm glad they didn't. This draft is so deep 3'rd and 5'th is going to get them much more in a rebuild than a star on a team that needs a tonne of work. Also, they need a really good defenseman. So with the 5'th overall, they should be able to get Drysdale, as long as Detroit doesn't pick him up first.
As a Sens fan Melnyk is vocal but an idiot for the most part. I agree with the statement about 3 and 5 but some of the things he's done are just stupid. He literally talked about relocation ahead of the NHL 100 classic.
Detroit is in a much more precarious situation. They are in an embryonic phase of rebuilding. Izerman could move a few spots back for a quality prospect or two. Izerman will probably keep his 4th spot but he should listen to serious offers
Melnyk said 3&5 would be nonsensical, he never said other opportunities wouldn’t arise.
Trade 3rd, isles 1st rounders, Logan Brown, and one of the higher 2nd rounders? What do ya think LEGO?
5 out of 20 seems pretty accurate but how many of those teams had the 3rd and 5th overall? Just the image of trading Stutzle/Byfield and the player Who Detroit doesnt take for Laff is just nuts
Great decision by the Sens owner. Keep 3 and 5 . I would go after Tim Stutzle and Marco Rossi. Stutzle plays Center and Right Wing. Marco Rossi is a center. And we need centers.
Dorion and his scouting staff are one of the best in the league.. historically speaking. I think if we were talking about Edmonton or teams with weaker scouting staffs, 3 and 5 would make more sense to trade.
I don't think we should compare pasts years to this year. Like crosby, Kane, Ovechkin, etc. and their potential were much ahead of 3 and 5. Where as in this year 3 could actually end up being better than 1, how many drafts were like that.
Melnyk has always disrespected his GMs. If he understood how many francophones would follow the Sens if he had Lafreniere he would be forcing Dorion to get him. Seriously, he’d have easily a 10% increase in ticket sales.
To Dorion's comment, No comment could mean hell no or yes we don't know but your crazy if you think that Melnyk doesn't make that decision
unpopular opinion, I'd keep 3 and 5 if I'm Ottawa. They could move both those picks to different teams and get back some assets. I don't really see the benefit to trading 3 and 5 when in hindsight anyone in this draft class from 2-10 can be put head to head and a debate can be made as to why they could go as high as 2 and low as 10. If I'm ottawa, I want two players who will take an extra year or two to develop over the NHL ready guy souly off the fact that the team won't be ready to compete until they bring up their top 5 prospects in a years time. Maybe I'm just thinking about it too much but 3 and 5 for 1?? The last thing I'll say is if I'm the GM of the Sens, there would have to be pieces going back with the first pick in order for me to even entertain that trade.
If I'd say look at 2 teams who picked up studs, became competitive but are still shit… Edmonton and Buffalo. McDavid and Eichel, both phenomenal with not really anyone to play with. I'd bring in two prospects who have ceilings just as high and develop them.
once again just my opinion.
Ummmm, it doesn't matter what the Senators "decided" to do LOL. There was no way in Hell the Rangers were trading Alexis LaFreniere to you guys! Whatever gave you the idea it was "up to the Sens"? LMFAO! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
What a weird Robo Voice.
Melnyk finally take a W
Would take Dach and Turcotte over Hughes, Kotkeniemi and Hayton over Dahlin to add to your lists… How much do you change your mind on 3 and 5 if you could take best available from those drafts? Not who was taken by other teams with those picks?
I think this says it all about what the Rangers will do with the first pick!
https://twitter.com/nyrangers/status/1296088333794377731?s=21
Ottawa would be stupid trading 3 and 5. Take Stutzle and one of Rossi or Drysdale.
Its been bad for the sens last few years with players leaving but man this is a great draft year and they've got a lot of picks. Good time for sens fans.
Downside to your “1st vs 3rd and 5th” chart is it leaves out everyone else that was available in between 3 and 5, as well as everyone after 5th. For example, juoilev might not be very attractive, but Dubois and Tkachuk on the other hand… I’d take that over Mathews in a second!
Senators should def stay put.
Byfield/Stutzle and Drysdale/Rossi/Perfertti/Raymond. Any combo would greatly improve their roster. Plus…with another pick in the 23-28 range, they can really make a killing.
If you look at the history of Melnyk and his involvement with the team then you would know him saying this is more important then the GM. He has in the last 8 years made big decisions as to what happens with the team and where the money goes that has forced executives to quit. the worrying thing is he is also known to use media as a bargaining chip to attempt and play reverse physiology to get what he is attempting to gain like his failed bid for a casino, land development, sale of team and tickets sales.
as a sens fan i want them to hang on to picks 3 and 5 because 2 really great players are more valuable than 1 franchise guy and the sens need to fill some holes on their roster and getting 2 great players would do that better in my opinion
Really doesn’t matter. If Rangers wanted to trade, Sens wouldn’t do it (if they did the GM should be fired). Rags wouldn’t do it because you don’t pass on a Lafreniere caliber player.
Trading 3 and 5 in this years draft for #1 and to especially take a LW was never an option I believe. See my other post about Eckblad/Draisaitle or Hicher/Makkar/Peterson
No guarantees Byfield or Stutzle on their own don’t become bigger stars than Lafreniere in 3 years …see Eckblad/Draisaitle….Hicher/Makkar/Peterson. Quinton and Tim also play much more of a key valued position also than LW. Center> Defence> Wing. A lot of the appeal in Lafreniere for 1st is that he is seen as the clear cut best and most ready to contribute right now player of the 3 (even though Stutzle actually dominated in a men’s league but anyway..). However, in 2014 it was the same case with consensus 1st overall pick Eckblad being head and shoulders better than anyone at the time and being ready to impact the NHL as a man child. And he did that immediately winning rookie of the year (Mark Stone actually deserved it more by a hair I thought but I digress) while 3rd overall pick Leon Draisaitle was nowhere to be seen sent back to Junior. Is Eckblad even in Leon’s league right now? Who can come here and say that wouldn’t be the same case with Lafreniere and Quinton Byfeild??? Who can guarantee Stutzle doesn’t electrify the crowds in NHL rinks as soon as next season in LA or Ottawa with that elite skating and massive puck skills? Hell I can see Lucas Raymond or Marco Rossi being huge star players in the NHL in 3 years time,
If it was the oilers they would've traded it for Erik gudbradsson
In 2006, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2017, and 2019 I would take picks 3 and 5 over who went 1st overall
No surprise there. I was hoping for it when I hoped the Wings would get #1 still, but it doesn’t make sense for Ottawa to do that for a player who isn’t more than Elite to Franchise, with 5 or more other players who are also Elite to Franchise potential. I could see doing this in 2022 when there’s 2 potential generational talents and then a big step down, but Lafreniere is hyped up more than he deserves. He’s good, and he’ll have a good career, but he’s not McDavid or Crosby. He’s also a winger (and he’s not Ovi)- he’s not going to be the top player you build your team around. He’ll be the 2nd-4th top player most likely- important to a franchise, but not untouchable.
Garrioch is known for being pretty much just a mouthpiece to the organisation. He's getting fed direct information from the team to publish.
Wouldn't be a terrible trade anyways? 3+5 does not equal 1…
Jonathan toews+pettersson or McDavid
Finally a video that can actually happen
I guess it was only a matter of time but I finally agree with Melnyk about something. It WOULD be nonsensical for Ottawa to make that deal. IF the Rangers added one of their two young goalies to the trade, it would at least be something for Ottawa to think about.
I think there would be more of a chance for an out-of-the-box deal like #3 + Islanders 1st rounder for #1 + the last year of Lundqvist, and I don't see that happening either.
The islanders were in the first round…they got past the qualifying one
yeah, as if the rangers would do it. FOH…
Why are people talking about this as an option? I don't think there's even a chance that the rangers would give up the first overall pick
