In the famed KLM Russian line, Makarov was the most skilled and clever player ever! When he was brought into the Calgary Flames organisation we loved it! I was completely bowled over and beyond excited. Our interest in hockey was resurrected when he joined the Club. I made sure we would go to every home game we could. One time , Sergei had 4 goals and 3 assists and it was like child's play for him, the way he controlled the puck- and the play. He was in a class above everyone else and it was easy to see how the Russians dominated hockey, at that time, with people like him in there. He (and Larionov and Krutov) didn't just shoot the puck into the end of the ice for no reason– which seemed to be the way the coaches in those days wanted it to go.. If they had the puck they wouldn't pass it off unless they had someone to pass it to. The Calgary coach, Terry Crisp, didn't like Russian players very much, and made it hard for Sergei to gain ice time and prove himself. The Press wasn't exactly ebullient about it , either ….He was the best play maker we'd ever seen, even better than Gretsky. A true legend and a hero of ours. To this day..
Krutov and Kasatonov should be next. They were better than many players already in the Hall of Fame. Induct the rest of the 1980s USSR "Green Unit". They are deserving of their place in hockey history. They went head-to-head with Gretzky/Lemieux/Messier/Bourque/Coffey in 1987, and almost beat these NHL legends. The entire USSR legends are deserving of Hall of Fame induction.

Можно набивать рекордную статистку, а можно дарить радость и восхищать болельщиков своим потрясающим искусством и виртуозностью. При этом соперники били Макарова нещадно, а Гретцки играл практически в тепличных условиях. Я счастлив, что вживую видел игру великой пятерки и Сергея Макарова. Это хоккейный ГЕНИЙ! И нам повезло называться его соотечественниками.
