Montreal Canadiens VS. Soviet’s Red Army: Best Hockey Game Ever Played

December 31st, 1975. Canadiens VS. Red Army, considered by many to be the greatest hockey game ever played.

  1. This game is not even close to the greatest game.  The Philadelphia Flyers too the body to the soft "Red Army" team and they quit.  That game is way better than this drivel.

  2. This such a typical Canadian/European mindset video. The "best game ever" is a tie. Yay- everyone wins!!! And what's up with the commentator at the end- "who could ask for anything more?" How about a VICTORY??

  3. My two favorite teams duking it out in the old days. The Russian KHL is a great underrated league. The games are quite cheap to watch. The Red Army team is called CSKA and they are still playing in the Russian league.

  4. I was there that night, it was a hell of a game, high tempo great goal tending, (ok Dryden was not his best) but a hell of a game

  5. Compared to CCCP vs Flyers match, Canadiens we´re gentleman team.

  6. Red Army was outclassed and outplayed by the Canadians. Montreal had twice as many shots on goal, Tretiak saved them from embarrassment. The 1976 Montreal Canadians were the best Hockey Team Ever

  7. I watched this game as a kid with my dad. And remember him saying it was the best game he had ever seen.

  8. The best series ever played was in '87 Canada, USSR in the Canada cup final. 3 games 5-6, 6-5, 6-5 Canada. Lemieux, Gretzky were off the charts awesome.

  9. Thing 1: unless you watched the whole game live, you don't get to vote. Everything factors in: the context, the ebb & flow, the little details, the highlights & the result. This was the best game I've seen in 50 years of watching hockey.
Thing 2: I hate the Habs. But I wanted them to win on this night.

Undoubtably the best game ever – back and forth, skill, physicality, goaltending, drama.

  10. Jan 5, 1978….Winnipeg Jets of the WHA beat the Soviet National Team at the old Winnipeg Arena…..if the Jets were in the NHL at that point….that game would be talked about with the same reverence! 🙂

  11. I don’t think that the Habs outplayed them. The Russians had a style back then where they were able to come out of nowhere and launch a counter attack. If a game is 3-3 it usually isn’t one-sided. I will say that Tretiak outclassed Dryden who became known for letting in soft goals throughout his career.

  12. Матч столетия, истории мирового хоккея 31 декабря 1975

  13. A great game, but how can it be better than the clinic put on by the Stanley Cup Champion Flyers a couple of weeks later?

  14. Canadiens vs Red Army: greatest game ever
Flyers vs Red Army: …. Pain.

  15. What an amazing game played by two amazing teams. No moronic "Bobby Clarke" cheap shots…just beautiful hockey (the way it was supposed to be played)

  16. The glimpse of the Canadiens dynasty to come. The same team who would humble the Broadstreet Bullies with the same skill, talent, and finesse.

  17. I watched this game live. The Canadiens strongly dominated the Russians, particularly in the 3rd period of the game. At that point it was largely Tretiak that kept the Soviets in it. I checked–final shots total was 38-13 in favor of Montreal.Tretiak had an amazing night This Canadiens team was likely one of the best in league history.

  18. best game ever a fucking tie ? what is this ? the best game was when the Russian cry babies got pushed around in Philly and wanted to quit. Cry me a river

  19. Not even close!!!! the flyers crushing the Soviets was the greatest hockey game ever. It was the two styles of hockey clashing obviously the flyers taking the body instead of the puck obviously worked that's what I was taught when I played hockey…

  20. I watched this game as an 11 year old on New Year's Eve. We were visiting family friends in nearby Ottawa. Let me tell you – EVERYONE in Canada was watching that game along with a good chunk of the USSR. It was INSANE! We were all screaming at the TV until we went hoarse. It was perfectly fine that the game end tied – those two teams were the best in the world and that game was the best ever played.

  21. Dreiden was such a sieve lol! Most overrated goaltender in hockey history. The only reason he won anything was because he played for Montreal.

  22. 38-13 in shots, best game ever? The Flyers crushed them 4-1. All the great games since including Canada Cups, Olympics, World Juniors were much better than this one.
