Tocchet’s comments on Petey paraphrased below (starting around 29:30 of the podcast):

    >He’s an interesting kid. He’s very quiet… he wants to be the best. He thinks he can be one of the best players to ever play the game. I love that swagger.
    >
    >Now, to get there I think for him is the leadership part… he’s going to have to drag people with him. He’s uncomfortable speaking in front of his teammates. I told him, when you’re the player you are, you have a lot of cachet when you speak… young guys want to hear you speak. Obviously he does it on the ice… he’s going to get his points, the next level (is) his leadership and I think he wants that.
    >
    >He’s got to get a little more uncomfortable, he’s got to learn to speak to his teammates, it’s not a big deal, nobody’s gonna laugh at you and that’s his next level.

In contrast, earlier in the podcast (around 26:35), Tocchet (unsurprisingly) spoke very favourably about Quinn’s leadership, and while he hasn’t made a decision yet, in his 4 months with the Canucks, Quinn has shown he is on the trajectory to be a captain. Specifically, in that he does things that are “uncomfortable”, like talking to teammates and coaches about hard things that need to be said.

Makes sense with his demeanor we’ve seen in interviews and such.

However, I don’t think this is that big of an issue; superstars don’t need to be the leader of the locker room, as long as someone reliable and respected is present to be the voice of reason and cohesion.

Just gives more opportunities for Huggy to take the next step.

Buy stocks in this quote, guarantee we’re going to over-analyze it into the ground (for better or for worse).

And he shouldn’t have to. Let him focus on playing. Let someone else carry the Captain’s burden. I don’t understand this desire to name Hughes or Petey captain. It isn’t a prereq of being a star.

And it’s okay if he doesn’t have an official letter on his jersey. Let the kid do what he’s best at and that’s lead on the ice, and everything else will come in time.

Forget about the captaincy discussion. I think that management knows that Petey is “THE GUY” who can lead this team to the next level…Petey just needs to get out of his comfort zone.

I think it’s good that they want to encourage him to take on more of a leadership role and to speak up more to his teammates. It means that management has faith in Petey and knows his words in that dressing room means alot.

Sometimes you do have to push your best players out of their comfort zone…because it could lead to incredible things. If no one pushed the good players to be better, then they will never have the incentive to be better…to be one of the best in the league.

As long as he’s a leader on the ice, it doesn’t matter what letter, if any, he has on his jersey. He’s consistently been one of the most hardworking guys every game, every summer, always has a no-bullshit and no-quit attitude. It’s fine that he doesn’t like the media or public speaking, leave that to Quinn. Let him put on his skates and lead by example through his performance.

I don’t see why this is a big deal. MacKinnon, Kucherov, Hedman, O’Reilly, Letang, Malkin, Backstrom, Kane, Keith, Seabrook, Doughty, Bergeron, all kept their heads down, didn’t say much, and just let their play do the talking.

    Just let Petey play hockey.

If the way he plays and practices doesn’t motivate a player get rid of the player.

  10. JerbearCuddles

That much was obvious from his media moments. This is why I never understood why people want to make him captain. He’s not that guy. Give it to Huggy and call it a day. Petey is a lead by example guy. Perfectly fine.

Does anybody get the feeling they are trying to groom Petey still? I mean based on these comments? I would not be too shocked if they still give Petey the C while keeping Quinn as part of the leadership core. Two young leaders just different roles

Perhaps they are on the fence about either scenario here and are waiting to see how it plays out.

I’d love to see Quinn as the captain, personally but I think they want Petey as the face of the franchise. Just am an unfounded hunch I got

Petey should start doing breath work. It will solve his problems.

Unpopular opinion but the captain to lead us the to the cup isn’t on the team (yet?)

  14. ellav96

I agree with all this that it’s not a big deal and if he isn’t offered the C or declines it, that’s life.

Deep down is still a part of me that’d be a little disappointed at a missed opportunity for him to rise to the challenge and be an amazing captain.

I remember Pavel was known for amazing locker room speeches /jk. I really just want Pettersson to be a killer on the ice. Like Bieksa said, everyone has their role and Pettersson’s role should be to hoist Selke trophies.
