this just showed up in my red wings search. the author must not remember the series correctly. he forgot to talk about how the refs handed the series to the oilers.

So in 2006 the refs called everything. This series was played 5v3. A lot of weird calls like Lidstrom getting a 2 minute minor (interference)for trying to avoid a hip check from Pronger. (why was Pronger running Lidstrom instead of playing defense??).

But the series winning goal, that this article glosses over, was hit down by a high stick and then kicked into the net. The oiler player never denies this in post game interview. It was the worse playoffs I’ve ever seen.

Later on, the oilers fell behind in another series and publicly complained that the refs stopped calling penalties. The next game they get like 3 separate 5v3 power plays, turn around and win the series. It was a dark time for hockey.

I don’t recall the reffing as any worse than usual. What I remember most is Andreas Lilja on the first-pair and actively sabotaging a stacked lineup.

Probably my least favorite playoff series of all time though. I can’t remember every being angrier about hockey than I was when we got bounced by Edmonton.
