Have you looked at how many times have been the bruins were the team who dished out the upset? I have no idea, but I remember them doing just that to Toronto a few years back. That was epic for me.
The curse continues 🎉
Since Orr’s last Cup in 1972, the Bruins won one Cup… against the Canucks.
Since 1940, the Rangers won one Cup… against the Canucks.
Leafs will need the Canucks to get to the Finals next year if they want to win.
I needed this autopsy. Thank you Shannon for helping this Bruins fan navigate the stages of grief this off-season.
The only thing that matters is winning the Cup. Championships are the measure of greatness the regular season is only the run-up to the only thing that matters.
It doesn't matter if the Bruins had the most points in the regular season or barely made the playoffs, they didn't win.
Team sets a record for points and wins in a regular season, has a 3-1 lead over the 8th seed team that just squeaked into the playoffs and you don't think it's a historic upset? This'll be talked about for decades to come.
The biggest take I get from this is just how little the regular season means. Other than being in the top 8 in your conference. Presidents trophy winners almost never win the cup in the Cap era, home ice is only a slight advantage and even if you are the best team, there is just alot of chance involved when you have to win 4 consecutive playoff rounds against other good teams.
To be fair I still think of the 96 Red Wings as one of the best teams ever and they got bounced in the first vs a not nearly as good San Jose team, so… they won it next year which doesn’t look like it’s gonna happen with all those players leaving and 10m in cap room plus Bergeron likely retiring but you never know.
Curse! A team should avoid attaining absolute home team advantage! The essence of the collapse was having a well balanced superb regular season culminating in blowing a first round playoff series 3-1 lead. Just as Ulmark misplayed the puck in game number five, overtime, the Leafs suffered from a misplayed blind pass by Gachelnick that produced a two on zero breakaway against Jack Campbell. In Game number six Dermot mishandled the puck creating a giveaway bringing about the Habs winning goal. As the cliche goes the rest is history. The Stanley Cup is a new season presently representing sixteen championship hopefuls. Play the regular season as best you can preparing for the new season of the playoffs. Brad Marchand recognized that reality as the Bruins regular season was coming to a close. I've quoted Conn Smythe before (paraphrasing) : The regular season is just to sell tickets, preparing for the Stanley Cup playoffs (preferably with highest seed).
Time heals all wounds, although it helps when the team you root for that got humiliated in the first round after a historic season rebounds with two consecutive Cups and a Finals appearance three years after. Boston fans have to wait and see what will transpire. I still think Tampa's sweep at the hands of Columbus was a worse choke, at least they learned from it.
I feel worse for Ullmark than anyone else on the team. Dude wins the vezina out of nowhere and now the trophy is just a terrible reminder of the collapse. Probably won’t even enjoy accepting the trophy.
Playing Swayman in 7thgame questionable-maybe in 6th, if lose then back to Ullmark in 7th,
How about the 1930 upset when they got swept in the SCF by Montreal after going 38-5-1 in the regular season? That's a 70-71 win pace in an 82 game season.
lol this is a lot of copium already and It's only 55 seconds in
Florida was +190 for game 7. What a ridiculous line, proving that analytics arent everything. Knowing injuries matters more 🤣
Couldn’t have happened to a more deserving team.
ULMARK GIVE AWAY TURNING POINT
Holy cow. I googled to see what happened in the Tampa Bay-Columbus series, and that series has its very own wikiedia article. These series barely ever get their own wikipedia articles. So this must've been one notorious series.
Bergeron only got a Cup because Vancouver out choked Boston.
Boston’s incessant turnovers and lack of physical play on the boards/behind the net lost them this series.
Bruins:
99 seasons
73 playoff appearances
20 appearances in the cup final
6-14 cup final record
All of the upsets mentioned by Shannon.
They’re approaching a century of underachievement and as a Bruins fan, it’s sickening.
those ufas tho :monkas:
Perhaps the top seed should have more of an advantage. Start every game a goal up?
Bruins were Never That Good its just Atlantic is a Joke Division unlike Pacific where even the Expansion Teams set records making SCF then SEattle Wins over Colorado Defending Champion. All these people laughed at me when I took Florida Panthers over Scrub Bruins too. Asking me what I'm smoking when I said they would still lose when Florida would not be first team to come back from 3 to 1 down. I thought Islanders had better chance but Bo along with Barzal made sure they lost. Not to mention Sorokin another overrated Russian goalie almost as bad as Igor. Boston just an Original Six team who gets Refs to Rig games giving them calls like that Dive against Florida all those PPs. Only reason it went into OT was NHL making it close for BB haha.
Re: upsets, the North Stars '91 run (pick any of the three series, really) was collectively more monumental than this. As Shannon points out, Florida was last year's PT winners and they've been perennial contenders.
Look at what the 1990-91 North Stars did the two seasons before and the two seasons after. Then consider that in '90-91, they beat the teams with the 1st and 2nd best records and the defending champions— one after the other *and never needed seven games to do it*. It boggles the imagination.
Florida just happened to be the 8 seed in a new competitive format where there are no Snorris teams and a year after they won that same PT. Not the same, even notwithstanding the historic season Boston had. I also feel like Boston pushed hard for the record, which proved to be a mistake.
In terms of which was worse, Tampa or Boston: Boston was the bigger choke per se (because they literally had a five-game series win on the tip of Marchand's stick and then repeatedly let it get away). Tampa's was more shocking because they got outright swept after making Columbus look worse than an 8 seed for the first 10 minutes of the series.
This is honestly worse than the 2019 Lightning lmao
Arrogant bruins fans have to swallow this for a bit 😂
I'm a Habs fan and FUCK the Bruins for not beating Florida, now I have to cheer for the Leafs uggggh. I think Bergeron could play another year but in a much-reduced role, if the B's trade Hall that would help with cap space and draft capital. I believe Boston has ONE more legit run. Coaching backfired as Swayman should have gotten the net with Ullmark injured. If Bergeron does retire though Boston should trade Marchand and Pasta while keeping Hall so their lottery luck is sky high, could end up with Michael Misa, and if Montreal gets lucky and lands Bedard the rivalry would be even more heated.
TBH as soon as that team wasn't getting Venza level goaltending they collapsed. Just show how good Ullmark was this season with Sway being the best back up in the league. Papered over a lot of cracks that lead to being a not so good playoff team. Personally didn't expect them to go to the finals but losing in the 1st round to a bottom seed makes it so this record winning season isnt actually a good season for them
What makes the highs of sports entertainment so great are the lows, and this is a big one
Has a vezina winner ever been benched for a game 7?
Can you use your powers to make the pain go away already
Boston have the most points in 1982-1983 season and lost in 3 round vs New York islanders in 6games
