For the New York Islanders, the Question is Should They Stay or Should They Go?

Today we discuss the future of New York Islanders GM Lou Lamoriello and head coach Lane Lambert. The two are obviously linked in many ways but what should the future hold for each of them. Will they be back and should they be back with this team in 2023-24. Both Brock Nelson and Anders Lee think so.

Plus, we discuss the signing of prospect Matthew Maggio to a new entry-level contract and we have an update on the status of Oliver Wahlstrom from getaway day.

All this and more on today’s Locked On Islanders Podcast with Gil Martin.

  1. Does it really matter at this point? Isles are doomed with both as long as lou stays gm. And if a better replacement like say sutter (he wont leave his alberta farm to go east) is out there isles could go that route. Outside of that not much out there on coaching end isles can do. Isles job not too appealing of a coaching gig. No quality coach wants anything to do with that pop gun offense and anemic pp. They would want assurances from lou of upgrades which he can't do. Or could go the real re-tread route with tubby boudreau or lavi the one time isle coach. Or the big thumb julien who lou canned once and stresses d as well. The fall is coming. It could be a slow process or it could be quick but it is coming. Isles need to be looking for a coach/gm to guide isles thru a re-build down the line. Isles are not an up and coming team. If they were in a position to get, say bedard to build around, every hot coaching candidate would want to coach isles. But that aint happening. Prediction-Lou stays, lane stays. Isles struggle next season and lou cans lane by mid-season to save his wrinkled old ass. And lee needs the one way ticket out of town too. His slow as a snail ass is gonna steal $7 mil. a year for three more years.

  2. If that wahlstrom statement wasn't a rehearsed one then it seems like he might've been pretty focused on learning a lot more during his recovery than I'd have given him credit for

  3. Correct me if i am wrong but it may take 2-4 seasons to get younger, cant do it all at once but i would see if i could move my over 30 guys that still have some return…..Varly…Nelson…maybe Lee…etc etc….I agree totally it is time.

  4. Hi Gil—I sure hope late night responses don’t inconvenience you and yours in any fashion—as you know I’m on the West Coast. —-If our team was a “young and hungry team” that’s trying to make their mark—-I’d be ok with the Count. However—-with Lou at the helm-for what his “Unrealistic” goal is—-then get yourself a Laviolette—-not the Count. All that Assitant coach experience showed nothing when the team was out of gas in the 3rd——ate his timeout—-unacceptable and unforgivable in my book——at any level. I do like him—-he has poise and emotion——but a guy whose been coaching so long——-and returning—-No!!! I —-Laviolette would infuse a pure confidence and energy with emotion and true experience and would not have the bad habit of tinkering and tinkering with lines—unless need be. Above all—-he works not have spoiled his timeout. ———However—Lou feels like Jason—-he will get up and up and up and haunt us till he’s gone. Take care Gil—-appreciate you Islander friend. I’d like to purchase your book Gil—-Respectfully I’d like it personalized—-let me know how this might be posible? Above all—-if you’re ever in Vegas—-give me a shout!! Never Say Die!!

  5. I don’t think Lou goes anywhere unless Lou wants to go. In addition , he has ownership’s ‘pri&$ in his pocket’ to coin a phrase. Lou can still do no wrong…. at least according to ownership. Excellent content as always, Gil
