Fleury was actually the third (and last, to this point) goalie to go 1st overall. Michel Plasse in 1968, and Rick DiPietro in 2000 were before him. But Fleury's the only good goalie to be drafted 1st overall.
The other problem with the defense is that besides not being offensive, they don't play good defense. We said bye to Matheson and Marino and didn't do well replacing them.
Sad thing is, Ty Smith has the potential to really be a key piece to a "mobile" defense corps with this team, but I'd be surprised if Sullivan allows the new GM to keep him. If he's up, he'll be marginalized on a 3rd pairing, where he'll suffer from being misplayed just like his last season in NJ, or he'll be flat out traded for a warm veteran body who maybe 5 years ago Sullivan saw as good. We know Botterill will cater to Sullivan's roster build wishes, so this team is doubly screwed if he's hired, which I'd be amazed if he wasn't.
That 5 goals by Mario on Hextall is the reason why Ron wanted to destroy us from the inside 🤪 Either that or Ronny is just that incompetent at his job.

Hi DK, Thanks for taking my question. I do need to clarify that I am NOT a devils fan. I'm a diehard Pens fan and was purely making an observation based on the playoffs going on. I love the daily segments. Thanks!
Glad you had a show about the Pens D. Ive been banging that drum for multiple years now..the Pens just dont have a good defense. I include goal tending in there as part of the D. It's more fun to discuss the forwards I guess. In addition to what you said about the Pens D, throw in the further damage that Dumo caused by being out there, He was a liability until the very end at which time he started to play just ok. Watching the other teams in the playoffs is a good indicator where the Pens are lacking. They need a lot of help if they wish to compete well next season
Regarding the Devils goalie. He was so poised and calm…Reminded me of a young Tukka Rask. He is also BIG. I think that is a problem with both the Pens goalies. they are both small. A big goalie just by the virtue of his size has a better chance of playing well when he isnt particularly sharp at times or his D is not helping him out….just by virtue of his size..occupying more of the net. Also bigger goalies can be more durable goalies and less subject to just being run over.
