Listening in from Rome. As always, insightful. Brind’amour is a coach who can win without a roster of stars. I think Sully is too. Malkin and Letang are all-time Pens favorites, and you can’t take away the three Cups they’ve won. But…both play reckless hockey and it’s not hard to wonder if either would have thrived absent Sid. If Sully can hang on, it will be interesting to see what kind of job he can do when Sid is his third line center (like Trots later in his career) and we have a bunch of young, fast kids playing Sully’s game.

Well I guess we'll never know what he'd do with the Canes roster because we're stuck with him as the Penguins HC. DK still with this silly notion that Sullivan has to be flexible, and change some things, while admitting he's not going to change what he does or who he is. All the while hoping a GM is hired that goes against the grain of ownerships favorite son? Like they'll do that, and not cater to Sullivan's opinion in the first place on who the next GM should be? Anyone see the failed logic in this?
Right now the Penguins have to find a GM and coach who can maximize the limited potential of "this" roster, while simultaneously moving the team into the next era that will primarily be made up of prospects and non-veteran types. That most likely will be 5 years or more down the road given the brutal and fixed construct of this current roster. Right now, the speed, and attack, attack, attack, blueprint that was the basis of Sullivan's two Stanley Cup teams is so out of place with this roster, or even the one they'll have 2 years from now, that it is a stubborn exercise in futility. Sullivan is the wrong coach for this team right now. Just as wrong as Therrien was in 2008, or Bylsma was in 2014.
Sullivan is already the 2nd longest tenured HC in the NHL, and with the Lightning being bounced in the first round, don't be surprised if that also very old team doesn't see the obvious writing on the wall sooner than the Penguins and fire Cooper instead of suffering a slow drawn out death like the Penguins and Blackhawks have suffered. IMO, that's smart ownership and management. Smarts that seems to elude Pittsburgh teams like the Penguins and Steelers who are way too attached to past accomplishments.
Do we really want or expect to see Sullivan still behind the bench 5 years from now when he may or may not have the players like the Hurricanes have now to do something significant with? Unless you can show me a HC who won cups with two completely different rosters of the same team during the same tenure, I think essentially trying to do just that with Sullivan is delusional.
