Mercogliano: This $610,892 bonus overage hit reduces the #NYR projected cap space for next season to around $11.76 million. That’s to fill 8-9 roster spots.

There’s going to be a lot of Hartford players on this roster next year with that little money available.

I’m not as knowledgeable of NHL salary cap moves like other sports so please explain why can’t the rangers create more space by either A)renegotiating some contracts like NFL (push salary into future voidable years) or b) trade some bum players like panarin who sucks in the playoffs every year (assuming NYR still have to pay portion of his deal to facilitate trade)

LOL …all the people on here the last month or so saying that either Tarasenko or Kane or even both could come back! there isn’t a team friendly deal that could exist in reality, which would work for either of them.
Thus ends the mini window Drury has improvised the last two seasons around the more expensive veterans. This team is going to be full of Wolfpack guys for the foreseeable future.

And if the kid line and Key, Jones, Robertson, Cuylle, Othmann (and which ever other forwards might magically rise to the top of the depth chart) can’t forge a new core in 3-5 years…this team will be bad again for a very long time.

Gonna need depth. So clearly we’ll see Cuylle and Brodzinski…well good thing that the Wolfpack’s third and fourth leading scorer all season were…*checks notes*…two 32 year olds (Carpenter & Fritz).

    Laff gets a bridge deal.

Miller could likely get a bridge deal too – he’s more established, but very young and didn’t have a Norris Trophy winning season.

I think if anything that next year will be tougher

Thank you for posting this. A lot of people don’t seem to realize how dire the situation is at the moment from a cap perspective lol.

Moving Goodrow opens our cap space to about $14.8M

If we’re going the ultra cost controlled route with no FAs brought back this is what it would look like:

    – Laffy $2.5×2 ($12.3M)
    – Miller $3.5×3 ($8.8M)
    – Jones $1.5×2 ($7.3M)
    – Cuylle $828K ($6.5M)
    – Rempe $820K ($5.7M)
    – Othmann $900K ($4.8M)
    – Domingue/Garand $820K ($4M)
    – ~$4M to fill 2RW

Could also see Brodz instead of Rempe. Cap hit would be pretty similar.

If you sign Motter to $1-$1.5M instead of bringing up Rempe we’re left with ~$3.8-$3M for our 2RW

A Vatrano type would have been perfect 😰

Gotta think Goodie gets moved which sucks cause he’s a great team guy ,and a player you want in the battles. Don’t think we have anyone that can take his place at the moment .

Currently signed, and on the roster (for now): Panarin, Zibanejad, Kreider, Trocheck, Goodrow, Chytil, Kakko, Vesey, Fox, Trouba, Lindgren, Schneider, Harpur, Shesterkin.

    That’s a cap hit of $71.1M.

That leaves about $11.8M(bonus penalty accounted for) to sign 7 players (4F, 2D, 1G) to bring the roster up to 21. Max roster size is 23 mind you.

Laf is not getting more than 2M after that playoff. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Rangers tried to bridge him for 1.75 but lets say 2M.

Miller is not getting more 3M on his bridge deal. Lindgren is currently making 3M and Miller has not shown that he’s better than Lindgren consistently. Again, I think the Rangers try to bridge him for less, but we’ll go with 3M.

That’s five million and they need to fill 7 more spots, five at minimum. So now we’re at 6.8M.

I was hoping they’d be able to resign Halak or an equivalent at 1.5 but I don’t think that’s going to be possible now. So figure Domingue at 775k.

Zach Jones is not getting bumped to 1.5M. At most he gets 1M. I still don’t see him making the roster though. Braun will be the sixth D with maybe Robertson fighting him for the spot from the 7th D. That’s another $800k.

That’s another $1.5M and locks up a goalie and defense spot.

So 1 forward, 2 dmen, and a goalie signed at a cost of 6.6M. That leaves 5.2M to fill out the remaining 3-5 roster spots. If they go with Hartford kids, they can make it happen easily.

    20-93-13
    10-16-24
    26-72-??
    ??-21-??

I’m not suggesting these be the lines, just throwing them together so I can visualize what’s left. Cuylle takes one spot at 823k. Otthman takes another at 894k. That’s $1.7M and leaves 3.5M in cap space. Motte at 1.5M leaves them with 2M in cap space and a 21 man roster.

So it can be done, but the roster is not going to be as strong. Even moving Goodrow doesn’t give them that much room to bolster the roster more.

So you need to resign Laf, Miller, and add a 6th/7th D to pair with Schneider, two RWs, a fourth liner, 1-2 scratch Fs and a backup Goalie

There’s some flexibility and internal options and you can try to move Goodrow and save that money. I wouldn’t expect us to trade Miller, but I wouldn’t be shocked if they did it and decided to go with Robertson/Jones at that spot too to save some money to be able to spend some more money at one of the RW spots.

Here is the unfortunate reality we have to accept – our roster will not be improved on paper. If we’re improved it’s coming from internal development, and there’s a huge lack of trust when it comes to that. The likely plan is to go into the season with a roster who can get us into playoff position and to prepare to make deadline moves to round out the roster. Hopefully Laf and Kakko take those next steps

The harsh reality of our situation is that someone is going to go and it will hurt and there will be some cost control playing major roles on the roster and for this organization to take the next step, that cost control HAS to hit because it’s unlikely we’ll have that much leeway at the deadline aside from minor moves on the margins.

doesnt buying out Goodrow or trading him help tremendously?
