Looks like Smith is getting the Duchene late-riser effect. I would not be upset with Michkov but McKenzie notes that it’s not unlikely that he falls out of the top 5. Curiously no Moore on this list. And if we’re 6, I personally wouldn’t mind reaching for Reinbacher instead of Dvorsky, whose NHL comparable is Backlund (I really don’t think we need a Backlund from this draft).

Dvorsky’s comparable made me laugh. Obviously not a bad player, but Mikael Backlund isn’t exactly the type of player you’re looking to draft with a top 6 pick.

In the event that the Habs drop to 7th and the draft goes Bedard-Fantilli-Carlsson-Smith-Benson-(X), would you reach for Reinbacher? Bite the bullet and go for Michkov? Go for another forward?
This is just for discussion’s sake. I’m hoping for Smith at 5, and Benson failing that. After that I’m not sure. Michkov is an insane talent, but the risk of a wasted pick is there.

My hot take is that Benson is not going in top 10.
He’s a top 10 talent but small winger who aren’t great skater aren’t very popular in the top 10 these days. Unless they are a special kind of skilled and smart like Lucas Raymond.

I really hope Michkov scares away some other teams and we land him. The biggest reason would be how it would effect our cap structure in the future. Take away the political problems, but having him stay in Russia for another 3 years I think can help us a lot.
When he finally comes over, he hopefully will be an NHL ready star that can jump into our lineup while still being on an ELC.
I hope in 3 years we are going to start sniffing the playoffs, so it will be nice to have a star slide into the lineup on a nice and cheap deal. Imagine how the kids could develop in the next 3 years, then all of a sudden we have an Ovi like player join them out of nowhere.
