Drew Doughty to Sign Eight Year Extension with Kings

With apologies for lateness in posting this as I just got home. I think this contract is necessary and will eventually be too much money for Drew, but they had to do it.

  1. he won't necessarily retire as a king – as we've seen these exorbitant/long-term contracts get bought out when the player gets close to retirement, & then moves to another team, briefly, to end their career (*while the original team has to continue eating a large portion of that contract to dump him off their roster..

  2. Hehe, and all of us in the LA collective fandom let out a sigh of relief. As Darryl Sutter once said of Kopi, "He's worth every penny."
Eight years down the road…is eight years down the road.
Even Rob Blake himself will tell you that Dewey is a better defenseman than he was. And he is now penning the deal that will keep him in LA. When asked about a team to build around in a press conference, Blake told the reporter that you build it around the men sitting two rows ahead of him. In that row was Kopitar, Quick, and Doughty.

  3. The man is nearing 30 and he isn’t even that good. 8 years is a long time

  4. For the first 5 years of the contract this is a good deal. The last 3 it’s kind of like the like said “he’ll help us reach the cap floor if were crap”

  5. Just like you said it's highly unlikely near the end he's worth that but that's the price of a superstar…Any and every team would do the same

  6. Hey. Like a month before the pre-season starts could you make overall roster team overview and looking ahead at the coming season for every team? I missed part of the draft and won’t be able to pay attention to the Free Agency and it would help me and I think a lot more people if you did. Thanks! Love the content!

  7. I don't think statistically Doughty will even be worth it in 6 seasons, let alone 8 seasons, but I think with the cap on the rise each year, going into the 7th and 8th years on the deal, that 11 mil they're are spending, won't seem all that high. Plus I'm sure by the end of that contract, Doughty will have brought some other intangibles to the equation, beyond just statistics, which will make him worth atleast a good chunk of that $11 million

  8. After saying he would take a Canucks player's "head off" clearly during a game, I didn't like the guy. I know things get heated, but that's BS. But there's no denying Doughty's skill and effectiveness as a player. He deserves that money, if market value is any indicator.

  9. Screw anyone who gets mad at you for literally having things to do in real life sometimes. Enjoyed the recap as always.

  10. This is why I don't understand why people say "don't sign Tavares! Wait until next year and sign a top d man" OEL is staying, Doughty is staying, Ellis will probably stay. The nhl off season is just so bad.

  11. This pretty much guarantees Karlsson is not staying in Ottawa. Melnyk won’t pony up 13M a year to keep him, cause that is what it would take.

  12. As a Die hard Sharks Fan im happy for the kings to resign him, competition remains strong !

  13. I love Drew Doughty's game. He's my favorite player that's not a Capital. I love when u watch any of the mic'd up videos he's always laughing n telling people good hit after he gets clobbered. U can tell he's really having fun on the ice all the time. A lot like Ovi, Drew doesn't take himself too seriously which in this day n age is refreshing! That being said, I think 11 Mill for that long is not a great value for the Kings but I guess like all professional sports in the world these days, grossly overpaying your athletes is part of the game and they had no other option!

  14. Hey Hockey Guy, now that your channel has gotten to be pretty popular and well known have u ever gotten confirmation from a player that he watches your videos? I'd love to see you do a video where a player actually joins u either by phone, Skype or in person! You do a great job bringing more coverage to the NHL through alternative/social media which it is seriously lacking compared to the other 3 big sports in North America so kudos to you brother and I'd love to see the NHL, whether it be players or coaches or even just League employees acknowledge it and work with you. You would make a great NHL Radio show or podcast!

  15. kings should trade jeff carter torrey mitchell dion phaneuf nate thompson and trevor lewis for players in their mid 20s

  16. Who knows maybe doughty will be a pretty good defensemen at an old age in like 6-8 years we’ve definitely seen it before

  17. Doughty is 28. At the end of an 8 year deal, he'll be 36. So, no, I think he'll be overpaid towards the end of it. But, as you say, the Kings are in a win-now mode and this will help that.

  18. Players officially confirmed going to Toronto on July 1st:

    John Tavaras
    Drew Doughty
    Erik Karlsson

  19. It's a deal that had to be done good or bad long term. He stated it would take north of 10 bills to keep him per year. If it wasn't the king's it would be somebody else when he hit free agency. Like Tavares I don't think he would allow a trade either as he wanted to control his own future. So kings where left with two choices. Pay him what he wants or have him walk with nothing to show for it. They payed and are better off regardless rather then him walking.

  20. Can't blame Kings. Either sign him or trade him. And sure as hell LA isn't gonna get anything of equal to a Doughty in return for trade.

  21. Of course Toronto misses out on their man! 😂 Although, who can afford that contract? But he deserves the money…
