I really feel like everything changed for Mario after he took that puck in the mouth. It was almost like the puck took his liveliness and his lightheartedness along with his teeth. He became a much more serious person after that injury.
You kind of allude to it, but this is not JUST him being played in the wrong role. Being in the bottom 6% of NHL defensemen is getting caved in, that is what you would expect to see if you play a replacement level AHL guy against top 6 competition. I can't imagine any other Sharks Dman (Benning, Vlasic, even Simek!) having those numbers if placed in that same role. I also don't think he was playing quite as tough competition, Karlsson + whomever played with him probably got the toughest assignments though I'd be curious to see some QoC numbers for the Sharks D corps. If Ferraro was actually playing more mid-pair competition and put up those numbers… woof…
Add in Ferraro's contract and perceived value around the league (Sheng mentioned the Sharks could still possibly get a 2nd with no retention), this seems like an easy win for GMMG if he has the guts to trade a beloved locker room guy. Until then, all we can hope is that Ferraro finds that 2nd year form and becomes that solid, Justin Braun or Paul Martin-type defender that can compliment an elite guy.
