San Jose Sharks’ Erik Karlsson became the first defenseman since 1992 to record a 100-point season but given the 32-year-old’s defensive weaknesses, should the Swedish blueliner win the Norris Trophy, awarded to the defenseman who demonstrates the greatest all-round ability over the course of the season?

This is the greatest season by a NHL defender ever, i will drop some numbers here to prove that.
Before EK65, five defenders have hit 100p in NHL.
Orr did it 6 times, Coffey did it 5 times, Potvin, MacInnis and Leetch did it one time each. A total of 14 times.
Potvin had 101p, but he still was only 3rd in points with Islander, number 1 was Trottier with 134p.
MacInnis had 103p, he was 2nd in Flames behind Fleury who had 104p.
Leetch had 102p, he was 2nd in Rangers behind Messier who had 107p.
Coffey had 126p(2nd in team), 121p(3rd) and 138p(2nd) with Oliers, Gretzky had 205p, 208p, 215p same seasons.
And he had 113p(3rd) and 103p(2nd) with Penguins. Lemieux had 199p and 123p.
Orr was runner up 4 times in Bruins with 139p, 117p, 101p, 122p, behind Esposito who had 152p, 133p, 130p and 145p.
But he won the team scoring 2 times with 120p and 135p. Esposito was runner up with 99p and 127p.
My point is that all of them played in super stacked teams with loads of HoF players in their prime.
7 times the team had 3 or 4 100p players!
All of them won Stanley Cup at some point with the team they hit 100p with (Coffey with both Oliers and Penguins).
Orr's 1969-1970 season is the only time a defender won team scoring with no teammate over 100p (Esposito close on 99p).
EK65 closest teammate have 67p. Sharks is nowhere close to a Stanley cup, they are a botton four team with fewest wins in league.
Everybody talks about McDavid, and the season he have(in his prime).
EK65 matches his number this season in 5vs5 points, as a 32 year old defender in a crappy team (Coffey was the oldest 100p defender before at 28 year).
I can drop more numbers but this is getting a bit long.
Gratz EK65 for the very best season ever!
Its only since he is not Canadian
These people know nothing about hockey ! Maybe they should take up ping pong. 90 % of the game is played in the Sharks end even God could not help the Sharks .
The fact that he did this good in such a trash team is just incredible! Hope he wins the trophy, totally deserves it. Being the oldest Defender ever to get 100 points
The Sharks were a minus 77 goals against. EK65 was a minus 26, playing 25 minutes a game. Looks like SJ let in twice as many goals when EK5 WASN'T on the ice. But just keep saying he wasn't a good defensive player this year, even though you know you're talking out you butt…
Clickbait title? Sweet bejeezus. The only way to compare +/- is if two defensemen are playing on a similar strength team. Short answer, yes, Erik has been better than other defensemen because he gets the puck up quicker than anyone else, still skates better, and just got 100 points on pretty much the worst team in the league that got rid of their other offensive star players 1-2 months before the end of the season. Bloody hell, he is approximately 20-30 points ahead of the next D-man….on a sheit team…..
Bad defensivly. Well anyone can do a youtube broad cast. Joke.
Its just click bait yes. Pple have to watch
Not sure who Arun is and neither do I care but seriously the sharks ended -82 and Karlsson -26 with him playing almost half of every game. It’s clear that they are a way better team with him on the ice. Can’t fathom how he can compare his individual performance with someone like Fox. Don’t get me wrong, he’s been fantastic but even a 10 year old can look at NYR’s roster and connect the dots.
And don’t get me started on Boston. Half their defensemen have a 40+ (+/-) season, does that mean they’re all better then Karlsson…honestly…have you ever been a part of a team?
anyone who says he doesn't deserve it is soft little fruitcakes. Plus minus is the most overrated stat and at the end of the day it is the team he is on that many get distracted by. EK is gonna get it whether ppl like it or not since he rejuvenated in productivity so ppl who say no can keep crying
Every argument that's made against EK getting the Norris is from a NY or Canadian media personality. Hockey is for everyone, as long as you're from Canada or the Northeast. Fox, Lindholm, Dahlin, etc…would all have a negative +/- on the Sharks and you're kidding yourselves if you think otherwise. But keep drinking the homer kool aid and getting upset that your hometown guy isn't going to win.
