The Nashville Predators lost star forward Filip Forsberg to injury in February, but was Forsberg meeting expectations up until that point? After a career season last year, we discuss the two things that stood out in his 50 games. Looking ahead, could Cody Glass or Tommy Novak unlock a next level for Forsberg? Plus, we grade Yakov Trenin’s performance in 2022-23 and debate whether he is more valuable to the Predators on the roster or as a trade piece.
Offseason report cards continue on today’s episode of Locked On Predators as we breakdown Forsberg and Trenin’s stats including our “one word” to describe their seasons. We discuss Forsberg’s injury and how the timing of it leaves us wondering where he will best fit in with next season’s roster. Plus Yakov Trenin plays an important niche role for the Predators, but will his contributions be enough to keep him in Nashville or do they make him more valuable in a trade? We give our letter grades on today’s Locked On Predators podcast.

Forsberg should’ve been traded when his value was highest.
Forsberg definitely didn't live up to the production last season, but who on this team did? It's hard to fault him alone when team production as a whole was down, but tough sight to witness during the first year of the deal. The regression of the powerplay was definitely a factor, and fixing it will have a domino effect in improving this team in every facet.
Trenin is consistent as a bottom 6 forward, and that's all you can ask for players in that role where he scores those big time goals when you least expect it. Great piece at a cheap deal.
Forsberg is probably the best player we've ever had, other than Pekka Rinne, and the closest we have to true scorer and that without being a gaping vacancy in any other aspect of the game. Are there consistency issues? Sure. Injury worries? Maybe.
TRADE TRENIN?!?!? DON'T SAY THAT!!! DON'T EVEN THINK THAT!!! Yak does so much to help you win games! Great defensively, great physically, yeah, great straight-line speed, and he can score. We haven't seen his ceiling yet. And remember what he did the playoffs last year. Three goals in four games, one of the few bright spots we had, tying Duchene for the goal lead. Yes, I know, it's too small of a sample to extrapolate from, I'm not saying that, but just for perspective, that's sixty goals in a season pace, on a team who's biggest problem is the inability to play playoffs hockey. That alone makes Yak invaluable for us! If the Preds make such a reprehensible move as that, I will be livid, infuriated, incensed, enraged, outraged and every other kind of raged you can think of!!!
