Akira Schmid made 23 saves when the New Jersey Devils shut out the New York Rangers 4-0 in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference First Round at Prudential Center on Thursday.

It was Schmid’s first shutout in the Stanley Cup Playoffs in three starts, each in this series. He has one regular-season shutout in 24 NHL games (18 starts) when he made 23 saves in a 7-0 win against the Philadelphia Flyers on Feb. 25.

Schmid became the third rookie goalie in Devils/Colorado Rockies/Kansas City Scouts history to earn a shutout in the playoffs, joining Martin Brodeur (May 9, 1994) and Sean Burke (April 9, 1988).

Erik Haula had two goals and an assist, and Dawson Mercer had a goal and an assist for the Devils, the No. 2 seed in the Metropolitan Division.

Igor Shesterkin made 39 saves for the Rangers, the No. 3 seed in the Metropolitan.

New Jersey leads the best-of-7 series 3-2. Game 6 will be in New York on Saturday.

Ondrej Palat gave the Devils a 1-0 lead 39 seconds into the first period. After Vincent Trocheck won a defensive-zone face-off that went off the pads of Shesterkin, Palat scored from the slot when his shot deflected off the stick of Adam Fox and over Shesterkin’s left shoulder.

Schmid made eight saves in the first, including a glove save on a wrist shot by Artemi Panarin from the left circle during a 3-on-1.

Haula extended it to 2-0 with a power-play goal on a deflection at 3:27 of the second period.

Schmid denied Niko Mikkola 23 seconds later at the right post with a glove save as he slid to his left.

Mercer pushed it to 3-0 with a short-handed goal at 13:32 of the second period, scoring on a one-timer from the left circle off a pass by Haula during a 2-on-1.

Haula scored an empty-net goal at 14:48 of the third period for the 4-0 final.

  1. I hate to say this but I’m glad I’m not by myself on my rangers this is BS come on rangers for Christ sake already

    Rangers fan for life

  2. As a long-suffering Devils fan, this vid is the most I've ever related to a Rangers fan. Only funny 'cause it ain't me this time.

  3. This is just a lifeless team. I feel bad for those die-hards who just can't or refuse to see it. Even games 1 and 2 they didn't do anything special and NJ has since figured them out.

  4. Just one more "excuse me" body check from Kreider please.. 6'3 225 skates like the wind and plays the most uninspired game I've ever seen.

  5. And you've gotten jack shit from Chytil since the extension. Drury gambled and probably figured he'd have a similar post-season to last year and thought the price would be higher in the summer but still managed to overpay. 4.5 mil for yet another center who can't win a faceoff. One who is so bad he actually tries to take a SOG rather then win the draw.

  6. Better men than me Ghunga Dhin (sp?). I shut this one off after period 1.

And for Saturday nite, I’m just gonna check in on the NHL app (scoreboard). Ain’t watching these chuckleheads live.

  7. You my good sir have a sub. Not because I'm a Kings fan and from LA who's also feeling your pain. The commitment to the game in general. Keep posting boss Good Luck to your Rangers.

  8. Is this a recurring series? Because last ok’ing at this, I’d assess that the lead guy is ultra aware of his camera being present and is acting up accordingly…
Probably nobody’s fault. We all act differently on camera. Go Devils!

  9. The Rangers have a good future no matter what the outcome of this series. Our home grown core and our prospect system is loaded.
