My Oricom radio is 3 years in and going strong! It is a great solid unit and I would recommend them to anyone 🙂

G’day Guys and Gals!

In this video i show you all of the steps necessary to install a UHF CB Radio to your 4×4 vehicle. I have chosen to fit an Oricom DTX4200 Dual Receive radio to my Isuzu MU-X. This UHF Radio is packed full of great features and is extremely easy to use.

The main features of the DTX4200 are as below :

-Heavy duty controller speaker microphone
-IP54 dust and splash resistant
-Dual receive
-Heavy duty diecast metal chassis
-12/24 volt operation
-3 memory groups of 16 channels per group
(PC programmable)
-Large 96 multi-colour backlit display
-Back light brightness (5 preset levels plus auto)
-Fast scanning 80 channels within 3 seconds
-Rotary volume/channel and squelch control
-Included in the pack; 2m microphone extension cable, slide in bracket and mounting hardware
-3.5mm external jack (for optional external speaker or PA adaptor)

As well as purchasing a good quality UHF Radio, you will also require a good quality aerial to be able to get the most out of your radio. I have chosen to run the Oricom Town and Country twin aerial pack. This pack includes a shorter 3dbi aerial and a longer 6.5dbi aerial extension which can easily be screwed onto the top of the 3dbi and spring base. The 3dbi aerial is great for communication in hilly terrain and the 6.5dbi aerial is great for long distance flat level ground communication.

In this video i show you the steps necessary to install a UHF Radio to your 4X4 vehicle and talk about some tips and tricks to take into account while carrying out the install.

  1. Nick, where did you get yours from? I thought you might be running with a coupon/discount code, like with the X9 throttle controller…so far eBay is the best radio and antenna, $602.

  2. Excellent vid! Any tips running the cabling through centre console area up to the unit? Going to put a light bar on soon and willhopefully route it a similar way! Cheers

  3. Hey Nick, Been enjoying your videos. Thinking about buying a new 4×4 – What do you think about Pajero sport ? Keep up the great work mate

  4. Hey Nick. Thanks for the information on this unit. I have been looking to get a UHF for a while now and I really like the dual channel feature. Out of curiosity, what tyres have you been using and have you had any issues with any particular brand. I still have original tyres but they will be up for replacement soon.

  5. Good video with some great commonsense tips for installation. I bought myself one at Christmas time but haven't had the time to install it but will do, taking onboard some of your ideas.

  6. Thanks for showing the installation process. I'm going to attempt this myself. How long do you think it would have taken you all up? I've decided to go with the GME XRS-370C4P. Will let you know how it goes. Cheers

  7. Nice to see you have a decent crimp tool, but you used the wrong jaw. You should have the blue crimp in the blue jaw, red in red jaw and yellow in the yellow. That way the correct tension is applied ensuring a good mechanical joint.

P.S. I am a 40 year RAAF trained Avionics tech.

  8. pro tip:
If you are wanting to have power when your ignition is on, use a relay attached to an accessory wire under the ignition, can also be found with the stereo, this won't use much load so don't worry about it blowing the stereo fuse, and on the other side of the relay you can have the direct power to the battery and leading that to the CB radio (slap a fuse under the bonnet for it) and now your radio will be powered on whenever your ignition is on and won't drain the battery when the starter motor kicks on for the second.

  9. This is the best walk-through/install video I have seen….. The tips that you give regarding usability are so well thought through (i.e. extra length of cable in case bull bar needs to come off / positioning of handset cable so it doesn't get in the way)… brilliant!! I'll be making good use of your tips when doing my install! Thank You.

  10. Good video Nick, but ask your passenger what they think about looking thru a "bloody great Telephone pole" as they look forward… Far better option for touring is the "five eighth over a half " wavelength antenna, around 4.5 Dbi. Two construction types, fibreglass but I much preferred the wire construction, fitted hundreds over a long installation career, and become " invisible" after a very short time looking forward. Also you very nearly bend your bull bar before those big springs flex…..Just some food for thought for your viewers..

  12. Hi Nick, Does the antenna have to be grounded to the bull bar or not? Because I see there is quite a good coating of paint on the antenna where it gets mounted/screwed onto the bull bar bracket. Thanks

  13. I hate when people call an antenna an aerial. They are not the same thing. Aerials are only receive, like am/fm radio or TV. Antennas receive and transmit, like the uhf Antenna.

  14. I have not long bought a MUX and your expertise and knowledge has helped me greatly. Well done Nic.

  15. See I wired mine to my battery n then it cuts out cause it says dc over load 🤦‍♂️should of just got a gmc

  16. Hey Nick, that was great thanks ! 15 months on , how have found the Oricom unit, has it been reliable and user friendly ? I am about to purchase a uhf unit for my Colorado and have read a few mixed reviews of the Oricoms . I really like the look of this unit and your channel look great ! Tim…
