The worst part about the Bruins collapse is this isn't the first time a Boston based team had a record-setting season only to choke almost immediately in the postseason. The New England Revolution did it two years prior…. and were knocked out in embarassing fashion to NYCFC. Who ended up winning the MLS Cup.
Bruce Arena's punishment for such a failure was being extended longterm so he could bring in old chums and schmucks past their prime in desire to chase the cup because three big names were on their way out. It went about as well as you expected. Now I fear that the B's will be headed that way as well. Truly disheartening and pathetic.
I hope I'm wrong, of course, but we're in for a long hard road of pain nonetheless. And we have no one to blame but ourselves.
The 2019 Lightning is still the worse choke. Yes this one is awful, absolute embarrassment. But the Lightning were record breakers that GOT SWEPT and lost to the Blue Jackets, a team that had up until that point NEVER WON A PLAYOFF SERIES.
Yeah they go on to win back to back Cups but if weโre talking about single season chokes, I still take the 2019 Lightning are the worse.
The biggest reason we lost the series was because Monty kept a clearly injured Ullmark in for Games 5 and 6. He was bad the whole series and clearly hurt but Monty would take him out for the fourth best goaltender in the league! Sway isn't just some backup, he would be an elite goaltender if he was a starter on another team.
A big part of it was rushing Bergeron back. He was clearly still hurting and it showed on ice, he wasn't able to be as physical against the boards and get in the dirty areas. Between that and Ullmark's injury, they were in trouble already, not even withstanding the sloppy play and CONSTANT turnovers. Hurts me as a Bs fan but they didn't deserve to win anything playing like that
