Button: ‘Matthews and Marner were nowhere to be seen in Game 3’

The Leafs are one loss away from their season being over after an overtime defeat in Florida on Sunday. TSN Director of Scouting Craig Button joins Jay Onrait to weigh in on the play of Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner against the Panthers, and the main reason why Toronto finds itself in an 0-3 series hole.

  1. The lion share of the blame should lie with Keefe and Dubas. Just look at all the constant shuffling the lines and so many personnel changes every game. There is no continuity or chemistry on the team. That is not just the core players fault. That is the coaches fault. Who's plan and scheme are the players trying to execute. Not there own but rather the coaches. Instead of just assigning all the blame on the talent, more emphasis should be placed on the coaches and leadership. The reality is there is nothing wrong with the players. The battle plan sucks. The leafs have more talent than most of the remaining teams left and the coaching staff can motivate or look at film or come up with a good schemes. We got out coached by better and more prepared coaches. It's not a player problem it is a coach and senior management problem.

  2. We want Florida well u got ‘em getting past the first round only means one thing-you gotta be better in the second the problem with professional sports is the stupid overpaid contracts (why try) contracts should be 50% for regular season 60- after first round 70 after second round and so on it would be better hockey that’s how contracts work in the real world

  3. Classic button loving the leafs, every single year he has stated that no team stood a chance to beat the leafs even after taking the lead in the series and when montreal went down 2-1 he declared it over. When is he gonna get booted

  4. Bull$hit. The Leafs have had the same problems for over a decade, and that’s in their own end. 2nd worst record for giveaways in their own end this season, only better than the Habs. That rests solely on Dubas. He’s had plenty of time to solve the problem but he hasn’t, so it’s on him And Keefe.

  5. What a joke of a team. Wasting 5 years of the Tavares contract. 4 years of Matthews. 4 years of Marner. 5 years of Nylander.

  6. the coach mixed up the lines they did not play together all season sent Pierre off for a draft pick and ruined the chemistry on one line dont blame the players this management has never been able to keep the good players kept Tavares but let go Hyman Kadra mansion Anderson and the list goes on

  7. This shouldn't be a surprise. They were very lucky to beat the older, tired out and injured Bolts, who were without their top short-handed minutes guy (Cernak), did not have their best offensive player (Point) healthy after he was hit midway through the series, had Hedman injured, and did not have Vasilevskiy in world-beating form. The reality is that the Leafs have not had a strong defensive core, or a team commitment to defense for years, and defense wins championships in every sport. The Leafs are a shinny team whose high offensive skills allow them to have fun piling up the points during the regular season, but they do not have the grit or grind for the playoffs. During the season, their record was something like 27-0-1 when they scored 4 or more, but it was a losing record when they scored 3 or less. Badly designed team, and bad culture paying guys tens of millions based on their junior careers and draft hype, rather than when they have proven themselves in the bigs. All the money tied up trying to recreate the high-flying teams of the past and none left for gaping holes. Shanny and Dubas should be long gone. Not a big fan of Keefe either, but how can we know how good he is with that defense given to him by his GM?? I think that they have enough pride and skill in the room to win one game here, but they could easily be swept. Regardless, they just are not good enough to take this series. Their "Cup" was the first round series, and that fooled the players and fans into thinking this was gonna be a long run this year.

  8. Either the core four are banged up or way overpaid. When you spend 40 million on 4 players it's hard to build other talent around them. them

  9. The series is over and done. We all know it. Leafs are not the come back from 3-0 team. Not one bit

  10. Leaf fans have the wrong scapegoat. I’ll gladly take Nylander to the Oil but Marner, Tavares and Matthews are bigger problems, if they get swept, Marner has to get traded.

  11. its fear, they look scared, willy is so scared he is afraid to touch anybody, mathews and marner are avoiding body contact, comon boys, lets go, go leafs go

  12. It’s over. We have regular season star players that become average in the playoffs. We had a tough time with a decimated Tampa that outplayed us. It’s the same story every year. It’s time to reconsider the Matthews, Marner & Nylander era. It’s nice to have stellar stats in the regular season, but what’s the point if you don’t show up in the playoffs when it matters the most.

  13. No. It's over. They've lost. Clearly, they weren't good enough to be in round 2. They tried this core multiple years and failed.

  14. How about this….San Bennett takes out Knies and the rest the team watch as nothing is done about it.. where is the help from the ownership and coaching staff to make the players feel safe? There is none! So why are they afraid??? For good reason. Clifford should be on that bench. These players tend no support from the management or fans. Brutal.

  15. The only positive here is they’re actually well positioned for a rebuild. Between Matthews, Marner and Nylander you should be able to fetch 4 or 5 first round picks plus. When teams are winning paying Mackinnon 6.5, point and stamkos making 8, 9 million, how can you expect to win paying matthews and marner over 10 mil. You shouldn’t even be paying any winger over 10 mil.
