DETROIT DRAFTS 9TH – YZERMAN’S OPTIONS & LOTTERY RECAP ft MAX BULTMAN – Winged Wheel Podcast – May 7

The NHL Draft lottery is over, and no, the Detroit Red Wings didn’t land a spot to pick Connor Bedard, Adam Fantilli, Matvei Michkov, Will Smith, or Leo Carlsson (probably). BUT, they didn’t move down.

Tune in as we discuss the NHL Draft Lottery results, including thoughts on the Chicago Blackhawks and whether they “deserved” the 1st overall pick, what Steve Yzerman & the Red Wings have to do now that they have never received the lottery luck they desperately wanted, feelings on the available pool of players, & more (4:20).

We’re joined by Max Bultman to further discuss the NHL Draft class, give overall thoughts on the players available, what’s next in the “Yzerplan”, how the likes of Larkin, Seider, Raymond, Veleno, & others have to lead an improved Hockeytown, & plenty more (17:30).

Next, we go over some of the potential prospects at picks 9 & 17, including Ryan Leonard, Dalibor Dvorsky, Oliver Moore, Zach Benson, Gabe Perreault, Nate Danielson, Colby Barlow, & others. Also, whether a trade from either pick is possible & other potential strategies (49:50).

Finally, some NHL & Red Wings news (Walman out of the IIHF World Championships, Carter Mazur shining), plus some podcast updates (1:06:50) before we take your questions during Overtime (1:09:25) – enjoy!

  1. Lmao@ryan being done with the lottery😂 I’d say sadly there’s a good chance we might have one more year where we might be in the mix . The east is way too good and sabres and sens are ahead of us at the moment

  2. We’re picking Matthew wood at 9 . Huge upside and bonus just found out he’s great friends with bedard and works out with him every summer and will convince him to come as a ufa 😂

I’m only trading pick 17 to move up. I’m not dealing that pick for a 27 yr old

Flyers at 7 is the team I think we can deal with if michkov drops to 7

  3. Hawk fans off the internet for 72 hours? Are you nuts!!!! GO HAWKS! If we tanked so bad WHY did we beat Pittsburg and knock them out of the playoffs and let Florida get in and beat the Bruins. You Redwing fans used to come to town for years and shove it in our faces when you had those great teams when Bowman was there. We have a five year plan, we will not be good overnight. We have a ton of picks this year and the plan is to be young, hungry and GOOD! The Redwings will beat us for the next 3 years and then we will hopefully find our game. It is going to fun to watch!

  4. Shouldn’t be trading for a nylander etc.. those guys aren’t the type of guys to carry a team on their backs and lead them to a cup. I’d rather target 18–22 year olds and hope we land the next take thompson or someone waiting to explode . Giving multiple picks and wallinder and high end prospects for a nylander who’ll command 9-10 is not the answer

Should trade a veleno/berggren(preferably veleno) for a young right dman. We won’t have enough spots for all these forwards and we should pick 2 forwards with our first two picks and target guys who can play on the top line.

Trade up from 17 and leave the draft with Moore and wood and I’m a happy camper

  5. As much as you want to believe that we're done with the lottery, unless something crazy happens this off-season, we're probably back with about the 10th best odds in the draft lottery next year. Yippee.

  6. I agree with Ryan. Wings need to swing big if matvei michkov is there at 5. We have too many prospects with not enough places to play

  7. I’d rather have more bad seasons than countless mediocre seasons where we just missed the playoffs with no lotto chance. That will be a decade of season that we are about to enter. It’ll be until 2040s before we even can reach the Stanley cup final if we “finally move away form lottery drafts”
