All right, it took me awhile to put this together, but I am ready to chat about players who are below 6 feet in height as we get set for a #1 draft pick who is 5’10” to join the league.

This dude came to Chicago in 1984 and he was considered undersized in his league. That dude was Michael Jordan. In a league dominated by centers and size at that time he rewrote the script via skill. Hockey has for the last 10 to 15 years been moving to skill, skill and more skill. Bedard may not be Michael Jordan but size isnโt going to be the issue it will be can his vision and skill translate to the NHL. I think it very well may if Chicago surrounds him with the right pieces.
Somewhat related sidenote: I really want to know whether these guys' official heights are submitted or measured, and if they are measured, whether each individual player decides whether to use their 'on skates' height or not. Like all these heights do not match up on the ice at all ๐
I remember when I thought I was gonna be over 6 feet tall. I've been 5'8" since I was 13. At least I'm taller than Caufield and DeBrincat, I guess.
Panarin is 5โ10 heโs just too soft
Haha the first thing i thought was take an inch or two off whats listed. Anybody in soorts knows that story. Im 5'10" but was often listed a bit taller even in high school.
I wonder, when we see "small" goalie?
Sidney Crosby has been listed at 5'11", 200lbs since his rookie year. I wonder what he actually is now

Cole Caufield is the perfect example of why you shouldn't just judge based on height hihi๐
Height lets go shan ๐
Also think weight should be left out of it. Poor Elias Pettersson all these points and all people do is point out to him how โsmallโ he is. Canโt change genetics! Letโs just watch them play and not worry about height/weight.
Theo Fleury was the definition of this video topic.
you forgot johnny hockey ๐
I truly believe that shorter guys have a built-in advantage in board battles against taller players because of leverage.
Only in this era of hockey
Now do goalies, Shannon?
"Thank god theres still a sport for middle-sized white boys" Patrick Swayze- Youngblood
Cogliano is 5'10", 179 lbs, and was well on his on his way to iron man status until a 2 game suspension while with the Ducks.
how do you forget connor garland? dude is tiny apparently, he said himself that his listed heights aren't accurate. i think hes somewhere like 5'6 or a bit over that
Saku Koivu is/was 5'10" and played a rather solid career…
non-story
Also Artemi panarin. I think that was a concern all throughout his career. I believe tarasenko vouched for him back in the day but the St. Louis management thought he was too small
"If you skate like a tank…" hmmmm that would be interesting to see.
Short kings rejoice, and wait until ppl find out about Lane Hutson
First of all, you may want to narrow it down to C first. Only 5 players from the list are playing C regularly (Crosby, Duchene, Jack Hughes, Gourde, and Point). Then, all of them are starting their careers as second C of their team (Lemieux for Crosby, Stastny for Duchene, Hischier for Jack Hughes, Stamkos for Point, and Gourde has always played third line [and dumped by Lightning in expansion draft]) so they were given less of pressure to lead the team (even McDavid was second C for a bit of time behind Nuge). The question for Bedard is, will Toews play for couple of years just to help Bedard to get accustomed to NHL? No doubt that Bedard will be a superstar but it is pretty easy to have doubts on many issues with his size. You may as well mentioning Tyler Johnson too,
Also for the sake of argument, other than Crosby that the other 3 players are such defensive liability (Duchene has career -92, Hughes -35, Point has +76 in his career but he is -1 since he became No.1 C ahead of Stamkos).
Samuel Girard is a great player, heโd be even better at 6โ so he wouldnโt take so many hits like he does
Great video Shannon! Plus Bedard is already 185 at 5'10 and only 17 years old. Height wise he could still grow but weight wise he will play in his prime at 205-210, his legs are like tree trunks similar to Sid but not yet on the same level. Basically he a thicccc boi like Sid
It's a rule in hockey that you always add 2 inches and 10-20lbs to your roster stats.
Zucca nickname as โThe Hobbitโ is classic.
Johnny Gaudreau is like 5'6" and he has roughly 180 points in the last 2 seasons.
Short King Marty St. Louis: 5 foot 8.
I don't think the height thing is set to be retired. Look at goalies now you have to be a pretty big goalie. Not many starters(or even backups) 6' or less anymore. For d-man it's the long arms/reach is why you want the height. There is definitely some validity to wanting bigger players at certain positions. Although bigger/taller players(in most sports not just hockey) tend to be less athletic than the smaller guys. Baseball for example normally our best athlete is your SS typically average to smaller guy especially when compared to the corner positions. Football, d-backs are usually smaller and faster than WR although Richard Sherman started to change that some.
So it just depends on who the game is at the current time. Teams will eventually adjust to the way the game is played now similar to how they did w/the trap and the trap adjusted to the high power offenses of the 80-90s. Look at goalies now, they are all huge and look at them in the 90s they where mostly 6' or under. Ever try to see a goalie now do a 2 pad stack, poke check, or even just play the puck with ease like they use to, they aren't as athletic as they use to be and rely on side and the butterfly slide. Now for those about to pick that last sentence apart and freak out I said not as athletic as they use to be not that they are not athletic, there is a difference there. And some of that is just the way the position is played now and some of is it the goalies just don't have that kind of movement due to their size.
Nik Ehlers grows 1 inch per year
Iโve got him retiring in around 7โ5โ
A D man who can't overpower adversary have to have good wheels and positioning. Jordan Harris in montreal is a good exemple.
Nhl changed a bunch of players heights for the past season haha.
Look at the players in the 80s during tougher times (checking/fighting) who were under 6-feet – Pat Lafontaine (5-10), Bryan Trottier (5-11) and Denis Savard (5-10) come to mind immediately for me. Go further back – Stan Mikita (5-9) and Maurice Richard (5-10).
Judging athletes by their height is dumb, and frankly, lazy. Athletes should be judged on their athleticism, reflexes, balance, flexibility, strength, fitness, attitude, personality, mental stability, and moreโฆ. But height? No. Thatโs stupid.
