In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the future of Nick Backstrom on the Capitals. Nick had a hip resurfacing procedure done last season and has seen a bit of a dip in production. Backstrom, 35, had hip-resurfacing surgery last summer, which kept him out of action until January. Since then, Backstrom has not played well, particularly on offense. The Capitals attempt 51.8 shots per hour when he’s on the ice, lowest among Caps forwards and a rate that would place the team around the league’s bottom five. Backstrom on his future: “Nick said he is hopeful that a full summer of training will help him regain the step he lost after undergoing hip resurfacing surgery last summer.“I’m optimistic that I’ll get some more strength back in the leg,” he said. GM Brian Maclellan wasn’t so sure. ““Marginally, yes,” he said, asked if he thought Backstrom showed signs of improvement in the final weeks of the season. “It’s a tough thing to get through. We don’t have experience observing players that have done that. I don’t know what can happen in the offseason to make it significantly better.” MacLellan said at some point in the coming months, it’s possible Backstrom will “have to make a decision on his career.”
