It’s plain as day that there are two standards that the officials are enforcing, and I firmly believe that it’s because the league is financially motivated to direct the officials to ensure that playoff series’ are extended where ever possible.
The side effect is that the team that’s being screwed gets so frustrated by the double standard that they figure that if they’re gonna get penalized, they might as well get their money’s worth. And that’s what causes things like Pietrangelo’s slash last night.
Kane violently boarded Pietrangelo, and it went uncalled. Sure, the officials did start penalizing Edmonton, but not until they ran away with the game.
Some say it wouldn’t matter because our powerplay is such a dumpster fire, but having a powerplay isn’t necessarily about enabling the team with the advantage to score. Even if we don’t, it’s time the penalized team is far less likely to score. Which would have kept is within reach.
Edmonton got away with dozens of obvious fouls, but Vegas does something even mildly suspect, and it’s immediately called. There needs to be an independent investigation into officiating throughout the league because this shit is getting really fucking old. Just call the game by the book. Quit enforcing a different standard just because it’s the playoffs. Stop favoring any team just because it’s advantageous for the league’s bottom line to ensure each series got 6-7 games.
It’s a sport, not a scripted reality TV “competition,” where the producers steer the outcome for the purpose of improving ratings. If that’s what the league wants we might as well clchange the name from NHL to WWE.
