For all of you "but Ovechkin" people: -202 of Backstrom's 500 assists are from Ovechkin's goals. -298 of Backstrom's 500 assists are from goals scored by players other than Ovechkin -Backstrom and Ovechkin have essentially been linemates since Boudreau put them together during Backstrom's rookie season…9.5 NHL seasons.
Surprise surprise the only guy he has played with for all 10 of his NHL seasons has more goals off of his passes than anyone else. Sure Ovechkin probably boosted his numbers a bit, but I still think he would be leading the 2006 draft class in points, and destroying them in assists. One could also argue that maybe Ovechkin wouldn't be at 500 goals yet without Backstrom, because I'm sure Backstrom has helped Ovechkin's numbers as well.
The next closest player from the 2006 draft class in assists is Kessel at 334. Kessel is also the closest in points at 620, to Backstrom's 680, but Backstrom has played 100 fewer games (693 GP).
The only players with more assists than Backstrom since 07-08 (his rookie season) are Thornton and H. Sedin.
I think he deserves a little bit more credit than "but Ovechkin."
