Button: A generational player like Bedard makes Chicago a future Stanley Cup contender | Jay on SC

The Blackhawks will be selecting first overall in the NHL draft for the first time since taking Patrick Kane with the No. 1 pick in 2007. TSN Director of Scouting Craig Button joins Jay Onrait to discuss the impact Connor Bedard will have on Chicago and share some of his post-lottery draft projections.

  1. With the hard cap that punishes good teams who make good picks/decisions, tanking is the only way to build.

  2. Do you think any team will approach the Black Hawks with a package of ayoung star player and a number of draftpicks for their first overall pick?

  3. A player like him dose not get you a cup that fact black hawks got him is a scam

  4. LEEEETTTTTSSSS FUUUCCCKKKINNNGGG GOOOOO!!!! Blackhawks are so back! You peasant organizations need us!

  5. He's not even in the NHL. Everyone needs to relax about this kid and see what he does first

  6. If the Ducks get a goaltender…LOOK OUT!!!
I mean no disrespect to Gibson, he’s been great. Just aging

  7. Cup contenders…seems a long way off. They have a lot of draft picks in the offing, and getting the right veterans at the right time will be key. Hawks got Kane, Toews, Keith, Seabs, and Hoss at the right time (and, of course, many others, like e.g. Sharpie).

  8. Bedard is already a big draw in Chicago. A stroke of fate the BlackHaws earned. Go Panthers!

  9. The Blackhawks are kind of a blank slate from a roster perspective, so it'll be interesting to see how their front office goes about filling out the roster with their draft picks. Obviously Bedard is a terrific start to building the canvas (assuming they don't screw that up), but it always takes more than one guy. Chicago is a great sports/hockey market, and Bedard's an unbelievable talent, so I feel they should be able to attract some strong free agent talent once the rebuild is a little more off the ground with Bedard gaining experience and some more of their other prospects coming up through the pipeline.

  10. I don't know if I agree with the size comments anymore. It's true, you need some big guys on your team, but with Point and Kane and so many other smaller players doing well – even Crosby makes that list – I don't think you should be afraid to draft them if they are the best player available. I don't think you want to overthink the draft. What matters most is competitive spirit and heart. If you have that, you can be small. Also, smaller players can bulk up a bit. And remember, smaller players have been playing small their whole careers. They know what to expect already a long time ago. It's not like they are playing guys smaller than them until the NHL – they have been for years now.
