The New York Islanders Make a Trade to Add Forward Depth But Is It a Good Move?

The New York Islanders acquired forward Pierre Engvall from the Toronto Maple Leafs for a third round pick in 2024. We break down what Engvall brings to the table and how he may help the Isles and discuss how this trade could help Lou Lamoriello make another deal and possibly clear out some older players to free up some cap space.

We also have our key takeaways from last night’s tough 2-1 shootout loss to the Minnesota Wild. Josh Bailey scored and Ilya Sorokin was strong but the Isles are just bad in shootouts and continue to falter every time.

We also have our weekly Farm Report on all things Bridgeport Islanders including an incredible highlight reel goal by Ruslan Iskhakov on a penalty shot.

All this and more on today’s Locked On Islanders Podcast with Gil Martin.

  1. Geez, Lou is out of his mind. He gives up a 3rd round pick for yet another low scoring forward, and this one is a rental. WTF is he thinking? If this isn't a setup for a bigger trade, he should be fired before he gets the chance to sign this guy to yet another overpaid, underperforming long term contract. This #@$% turd of a GM has stripped our AHL club of assets to the point this is what he considers an improvement. How many picks has he traded away now? We're going to be screwed for years to come.

  2. So frustrated with the loss last night. At this point when the game goes to a shootout I turn it off because I know the Islanders can’t win in a shootout situation. Congrats to the Minnesota goalie though, he played a helluva game.

  3. Pierre has the tools to be a very good player, he just seemed to have a mental block that only lets it all come together 1/3 of the time. If he gets a boost of confidence from the change of scenery he could be great for you guys. If someone in your dressing room could get him to play angry a bit more that’d help too.

  4. The shoot out problems are indicative of a greater problem. It ties inperfectly with their inability to capitalize on turn overs/break aways which also has been abysymal. Their lack of ability to score as a complete team for the most part is a major component of why they are where they are right now. I call it insanity (doing things the same way and expecting a different result). I wish they couldl egularly enter the zone driving the center with proper spacing and even the defense jumping up on the rush. They tried it a bit early on but gave up too quickly to see any real longer term upside. I think the dump and jump play is designed for low scoring game play. If the opposing team manages to break the defense a bit the Isles start playing desparate and then the mistakes increase and more frustrating they double down on chip and chase. The team has not been good at adjustment to the game out of what apepars to me to be fear based. Lots of mental breakdowns have cuased many a loss this season. Both by player and coaching IMHO.

  5. I have to say and it drives me insane but the rangers went out and got terensenko and Kane. When they want something they make it happen. Islanders having Lou as gm didn’t change anything. Players don’t want to come here and Lou is clueless. By the time he retires islanders won’t have any draft picks. Engvall sounds like a taller version beauvillier.

  6. Lou acquires another 12 goal scorer-YEAH. Go and get 'em lou. Now bj's got quick and are gonna flip him to vgk or pens who hex had in la leaving isles with varly. Pat yourself on that one too lou. Pens in on boeser/j t/chychrun (along with caps) too. I guess hextall took the 'FIRE HEXTALL' chants serious as lou gathers more bottom sixers. Lou would make a good hunter/gatherer.

  7. DEAR GIL: DO THE ISLANDERS HAVE ENOUGH TO BEAT THE RANGERS AND TO BEAT CAROLINA? IF ALL THEY DID WAS BEAT THE RANGERS I AM SATISFIED AT THIS POINT BECAUSE I AM NOT VERY HAPPY ABOUT THE RANGER FANS BRAGGING ABOUT HOW THEY ARE GOING TO SWEEP THE ISLANDERS AND WIN THE CUP.

  8. He's got some nice skills and a crazy long reach and stick. He can be frustrating because he has so much size but no grit or physicality to his game. As a Leafs fan I didn't mind Engvall., he's a good bottom 6 guy.

  9. This is awesome stuff! I was making breakfast while listening, so apologize if I missed this…I know he's played both before, but do we think he'll slide in at C or wing? In my eyes he could play third line C for JGP until he comes back and get Koivola the hell out of the lineup once he's back

  10. He is worth a third round pick. He is big, fast and can move the puck. His lack of physicality drove the fans and the Toronto media crazy. The Leafs needed more sandpaper to face Tampa, and if we’re lucky, the big bad Bruins. Wishing Pierre and the Isles the best of luck!

  11. This shows Lou has no intention to sell at all. We could have used some picks this year. Not a good sign for the future.

  12. I'd bet that Pierre was drafted by Lou L during his time as Leafs GM and I think he's playing a hunch. Considering Lou's track record I'll bet that its better than a good pickup. Definitely worth a 3rd round pick.

  13. Leaf fan here. People disparage players they think are not tough or nasty enough to be effective in the post-season. That's the primary knock on Engvall, but he was important in the Toronto Marlies winning the Calder Cup & is an example of a 7th round draft pick being successfully developed by an organization. An outstanding skater for a big guy, plays D & he has the potential for 20 goals & 35-40 points. To succeed in the playoffs, you have to 1st get to the playoffs & he should definitely help the Isles as a reliable bottom 6 guys with offensive upside. Lou knows him from Toronto & will likely re-sign him. Toronto needed the cap room, so no choice here.

  14. First off PIERRE ENGVALL is not a depth player. He will be 3rd line maybe 2nd. At times. He big fast 40 to 50 PT guy.. He has a long reach at 6ft 5 inches.he isn't depth. I'd won't be surprised to see a d man come .is MAYFIELD a UFA next year? If so sign him or trade him can't let him walk for nothing like Tavares did.

  15. There shootout attempts are terrible. They need to go to the net quickly. This side to side slow motion approach just doesn’t work for our shooters.
