The core four did not seem to have the leadership, nor the charisma to lead the Leafs to a win…
its so funny how every year leaf fans cry they were goalied by the other team. thats cuz the leafs cant forecheck. Scotty bowman said: when you say it was the goalie why you lost it hides the underlying truth that your team isnt good enough. jaroslav halak was great in the playoffs until he faced great forecechecking teams late in the playoffs. Nobody was "Halak'd", the teams he faced just sucked at the forecheck. And dominik hasek was robbing teams in the playoffs for over a decade and never won a cup cuz later in the playoffs the great forechecking teams forced goals on him, but the leafs cant force anything. hasek only won 2 cups very late in his career cuz he ended up in detroit a great forechecking team and a great defensive team that prevents forechecking, the leafs are neither of that and far from it. Why did boston score so many more goals on florida in the 1st round than toronto did ? Is it because they are a superior forechecking team than toronto ? hmmm
Very simple, they are only built for the regular season and this team is not made for the playoff.

Dubas has rebuilt the bottom six but the top 6 has pretty much stayed the same. A need for a tough top 6 has been something Dubas has never looked at.
LOL las vegas and seattle are still going and the Leafs with all the money, all the so called wiz-kids on and off the ice can't get out of there own way! The team needs a nuclear blow-up! Marner and Nylander need to go! Its funny people go on and on about how good Nylander was, what a JOKE! You can't win in the playoffs with SOFT stars! and Nylander is as soft as dylan mulvaney skin! You guys are taking like you have 50 years of hockey experience behind you, NOT. I sat behind the Leafs bench when they won the cup in 67.
Here's my solution
1) Dump Shanahan (shake-up #1)
2) Give Dubas, Shanny's job – why, because you need to have someone to deal with the draft and contracts before July 1
3) Dubas to fire Keefe (shake-up #2)
4) Extend Willy
5) Extend Mitch
6) Trade Matthews – why, because he isn't worth a $14 million extension with a $10 million signing bonus and you will get the best return on investment
7) Extend O'Reilly and make him the Captain – sell it to Tavares as a lightening of his workload
8) either acquire a power forward from the Matthews trade or trade for one with the proceeds of the trade
9) keep Woll up with the Leafs

Blow it up? And probably NOT even make the playoffs for a long time? Is that what people really want? Maybe/probably get a new coach who can implement defensive systems that work AND some new bottom 6 players who are tougher and more defensive minded in playoff hockey. But you don't destroy the team. That would be assinine.
I know it's unfair but trade Nylander In the June draft. Don't resign Gustafsson, O'Reilly, Kerfoot, and please don't resign Holl 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🤣🤣🤣. Resign Kampf, Acciari, Bunting, Schenn and Samsonov. Buyout Murray and JT. Fire Keefe. Keep Dubas unless u can find a gm to replace him. The best gms already signed with teams like Holland, Nill, Sakic and Yzerman their teams not letting them go.
Toronto has always been a destination place to play. That was part of the problem in the 80s and 90s. They should get rid of anyone from the GTA

It's hilarious that teams like The Golden Knights and the Kraken can be competitive right out of the gate yet the Leafs remain lost in the wilderness for decades. That's a management issue.
MLSE fear Auston and Mitch – 2 good buds that will have no trade clauses kick in and neither willing to take a discount. They will both be leaving to the same team 1 year apart.
Time to take a page from Masai's playbook. I know the 2 sports are radically different but the essence is the same. This team has plateau'd. Individually the core4 are immensely talented. In a group the mix is not there for a Cup team.
I feel like the more we get to know Matthews as a player, the more he strikes me as a Fedorov who needs an Yzerman. A Modano who needs a Nieuwendyk. A Stamkos who needs a Point. A Sakic who needs a Forsberg etc. He is a high level talent, but hes not the spiritual leader needed to get the team to a Cup. I think Tavares was intended to be that player, but clearly Tavares is not that guy. Player wise JT would be the one to move. The nmc complicates everything. Secondly Marner should be moved. But his nmc kicks in on July 1st. We need a more balanced forward group with a winning pedigree. When you have Kerfoot & Jarnkrok & Bunting in your top six , that is not a Cup roster. Cant wait to see what happens. Great show guys 👍🏽…..oh and Billy Nylander is a certified beauty who absolutely should not be moved

Problems in playoffs with Leafs core: 1) Matthews is not a Generational $12 M player, 2) small talented wingers (Marner & Nylander) are not a priority of a good core, 3) Leafs since 2004 haven’t secured A1 NHL level goaltending, and 4) JT is aging out. I expect this Leafs core stays – maybe the coach gets fired – and Leafs fans watch 7 more years of this.
One thing you guys forgot to mention: 2 regulations wins in the entire playoffs… 😬
On behalf of FTL Nation, this weekend has been absolutely beautiful. The world feels just a little better, the sun shines a little bit brighter, and us ex-Leaf fans are delighted we gave up the koolaid long ago. I'm koolaid-free since '73. The yearly elimination feels like Christmas all over again. The parade is Tuesday.

I suspect Leafs will again try to tinker around the edges.. try to sign O'Reilly, Schenn, and Acciari for full seasons, find replacements for Kerfoot and Holl, trade out Murray. To pay for all that, one of the 3 core forwards has to go. Tough call actually, unless Matthews wants too much money to extend. This is not the time to change GM's. What happens with Matthews dictates everything else they do and when.

did anyone else see Colorados top guys in the playoffs forechecking hard last year for the cup, Mac and Ranta and Landeskog. The leafs top guys are nothing like that. whats funny is Vegas is proving you dont even need top guys to go far if you are loaded with heavy forecheckers with some speed and a bit of skill. the playoffs are all about good forechecking and its proven every year in the finals. the leafs are built for the all star game where guys dont even try hard with space but in the playoffs that space disappears and the leafs are finished without space cuz none of their top guys can forecheck, tavares cant even he is too slow and always 2 steps behind the play, he cant even make it to the boards before the defenseman clears the puck, and marner and nylander wont go there because of fear, they just turtle. the leafs will never win with them. against florida the leafs looked the best 5 on 5 when their 4th line Kampf and Lafferty were on the ice because they forecheck hard but they only play 10 minutes of the game, what about the other 50 minutes of the game??
It's been too many years of the same bad movie. There needs to be a change to maintain interest and hope. If they run it back, I'm done supporting this version of the Leafs. Just not interested in this core group anymore.
