Do the Detroit Red Wings have a North American scouting problem?

Do the Detroit Red Wings have a problem scouting & drafting from North America compared to stars from European leagues that they’ve picked, like Seider & Raymond?

  1. Love that you guys covered this. My theory is Stevie continues to prioritize drafting Euros because he has a better braintrust than his NA staff.

  2. You guys are sleeping on Hanas. Dude can score highlight worthy goals. But yeah North American drafting hasn't been good…

  3. I think it's more that steals are more easily available from Euro leagues so it makes sense to try when you're just outside the top 3 every year.

  4. The key is not how good your team's scouting staff is in absolutely terms (unless you get a lottery pick, which has never happened for the Wings). The key is how good your scouting staff is relative to the rest of the league.

I don't think that the Red Wings have particularly bad North American scouting. It only seems that way because the rest of the league scouts North America better than they scout Europe.
