  1. If Matthews demands are such that you can’t afford Nylander, I’m dealing Matthews and keeping Nylander. It’s probably the wrong decision but there’s something to be said for taking less and being the teams best player every playoffs. Sorry not sorry.

  2. Let’s not forget the big reason for his holdout was he was concerned if he signed too team friendly a contract he’d be traded at the deadline. He wants to be here

Love Willy. Love everything about the guy.

    I hope he’s a leaf for life. 💙

Same for Matthews, no matter the sentiment of others on this app.

Isn’t the easy solution to extend Matthews and Nylander now on a long term deal that is somewhat friendly now and that goes up in value after Tavares’ contract is up?

  4. Matrix17

Nylander is the one guy I wouldn’t move lol

  5. terimaki89

I want to keep willy because out of all our top guys he deals with pressure and criticism the best.

KEEP this kid. Yeah we will all get annoyed with him for 10-15% of the season but the rest of it hes going to put up 80-90 pts and he will perform in the playoffs. What more could you want?

  6. chai_bronz

It sucks the NHL salary cap has only gone up like $4m in the last 5 years.. hopefully players’ expectations are reasonable given that.

  7. Gankdatnoob

Willy is unironically the best trade asset. Great season, kind of clutch playoff performances, good cap hit and unfortunately the player we do not want to move lol.

Moving Willy would be a disaster. The player moved has to be Marner.

I’ve been saying for years, Nylander is the best overall forward on the team.

Yeah, defense isn’t his strong suit, but every player has holes in their game. You take the (very good) with the bad, and understand that you need to surround them with pieces that shore up those deficiencies so they can do what they do best

The difference is that Nylander keep learning, evolving, and getting better, while our other stars seem frozen in time.

Pay that man his money so he stays.

  9. Aside from the contract holdout hijinks, I’ve always liked Nylander. I always hear about how he’s constantly working on his game, going overseas to play in the summer, he works at it and he hustles (more than he used to) as well. He’s improving and it shows.

  10. This guy has been in trade rumours since he got here. Half the fanbase (don’t pretend it’s just the older gen, lots of people fall into this) wanted Ritchie or Ehlers instead at the draft.

His physical game is using his strength to protect the puck versus solely throwing and taking hits so a lot of backlash for him for that.

Most importantly, when he plays poorly, and everyone shits on him (including the coaches), he acknowledges it and responds.

Keep him forever. Don’t let him even retire.

  11. Someone during trade deadline mentioned this and I agree.

Nylander is the ‘potential’ top 6 every team wants to overpay a late 1st+picks+prospects for during the deadline. Comes with his flaws and strengths.

It would definitely have to be a reall good trade value to consider him as trade material. It could happen but I’ll be sad.

I’m just too scared to trade Matthews, but if we ever get rid of Willy I would actually be devastated. He has been my favorite player since he was on the Marlies. I can live with losing anyone else but I’d be heartbroken without Willy.

8.8×8 with a NMC would be a reasonable discount I think he’d consider (if the rumours about him just to be unmovable during his last negotiation were true). Guys in that range are like Rantanen, Kaprizov, Laine, Zibanejad, B. Tkachuk, and I think he slots in right in the middle of those guys.

  14. Leviathan117

Please keep him. Any new contract for Nylander is gonna be cheaper than Marners first contract. And Marner will want a raise for his new contract.

    Boomers in shambles
(This is an old very tired joke but still makes me smile every time I see it, especially if I really try to imagine boomers in shambles over Nylander).

  16. Jakovasaurr

Keep all four of em, theyre fun to watch

  17. EddyMcDee

Really need the goddam cap to start going up.

  18. KollyKibber

I love it but they all say it. Yet no one wants to take a discount on their contracts. They all want every penny and then say they want to win lol I guess we’ll see ho the next contracts unfold

  19. -ArthurMorgan

Maaaaan, my dyslexia ran wild with this one. I definitely read the first sentence as “I don’t want to be here”.

  20. kru_kush420

Hope they figure something out to keep him on

  21. LiftsEatsSleeps

Willy has been a good value. Dude plays hard under pressure. I want Willy on this team. He’s not the one that needs to take a discount to make this team work. The 11m players are the strain on the cap not Will.

  22. Seagal_Bullshido

The only one worth getting rid of is Tavares. He’s way overpaid. I say give him the option of re signing him with a sizeable pay cut and use that money to get some gritty and hard hitting defencemen. The leafs need more players that have grit, are willing to throw huge hits, and are willing to stand up and defend the superstars. A leafs team with physicality would be a force to be reckoned with.

  23. If they trade Willy, I’m officially done with the team.
