[Johnston] Kyle Dubas says he’ll only work in Toronto if he works anywhere next season. It’s been a really difficult season on his family and he needs to be sure that they’re still onboard.

For those wondering if CJ is making shit up this time – that was pretty much verbatim.

He starts off saying he’s not sure what he’s going to do, and then at the end of his answer (which mostly references how he needs to talk to his family) he makes a point of doubling back to say “I wouldn’t go anywhere else, I will either be here, or taking time off completely”

Honestly, Dubas sounds tired. The guy’s probably dealing with some burnout.

how can we make it easier on his family if he stays? I’ll mow their lawn if someone is willing to shovel the driveway.

I’m a Los Angeles Rams fan and this sounds exactly like the head coaching situation this offseason with Sean McVay. Both young guys who landed big jobs much younger than others. Both who absolutely love the game (maybe too much?), but also want to spend time with their young families.

Like McVay, I expect Dubas to be back.

So either it’s Toronto or he takes a Step back? IMO I wonder if Shanahan is going to step away and Dubas takes over his Position while Pridham becomes GM and Spezza and Wickenhiser as Co AGMs? That way Dubas can still enact a vision for this team without having to make the changes himself I.e A Trade involving the Core4 or a HC Firing

The thing is if Dubas were to take, say, a year off than other teams would be waiting in the wings to hire him and might even plan around that timeline. If I were in his shoes I would rather wait for the right opportunity than rush into a situation like running the Penguins front office who are clearly in denial about the age and declining skill of their core players.

    Really hope he stays.

The pressure will only grow on Dubas and the job won’t get any easier,
Not unless he can move Tavares

Interesting comments all around. Sure sounded very sincere. But there’s also possibly a negotiation going on here with Dubas making a point to MLSE that he’s willing to go if that’s what happens and he could use the break anyways. Maybe he’s laid down terms for him continuing with the Leafs and that’s where things sit right now with MLSE deciding how they’re going to respond to this.

I mean, there’s no way that Dubas hasn’t talked the future with some of the MLSE folks and Shanahan. Dubas saying “I dunno” is disingenuous. He knows where this is all leaning at the moment and there has to have been a tactical element to those comments, regardless of sincerity.
