So keep dubas and get a new coach please.

  2. BigMick20

They could pay people a lot less money to “run it back” each year. Sounds like a fairly easy job.

  3. They should be.

Also, sidebar, Friedman was absolutely terrible on the SN panel this offseason. Aside from Bieksa that panel was basically a bunch of robots which all seemed afraid to express any real opinions that might upset the NHL. I’ve seen Friedman on other shows and I know he has expertise and personality, but watching that panel was atrocious. That panel needs a serious shake-up. Rant over

Good. You don’t fire ppl unless you have a better option lined up. He doing his job well imo. The prospects are pretty good and team somehow is competitive even with the cap issues (which he is mainly to blame I know)

He’s a great gm, I have full faith with him. My only worry is if he keeps Keefe. No doubt Keefe is his guy and they seem to be aligned in their beliefs but Keefe execution has been spotty.

I think one reason that little changes could be made is so that players looking to resign (cough Matthews cough) see the stability with the management group compared to new faces and the unfamiliarity with those people

    >As for Sheldon Keefe, the team does not want to make a change for the sake of it but is probably going to keep tabs on the market to see if there is anyone available who could be an upgrade over the current coach.

This line worries me. Firing him isn’t change for the sake of change after 4 years of the same issues.

In before Leafs announce Peter Chiarelli as the new GM, and his first act is to bring back Mike Babcock as coach.

He doesn’t coach and he doesn’t play. He’s supposed to build a roster.

We have a pretty good fuckin roster. Yeah it’s not perfect, yeah some contracts ideally could be different, but you can’t can him over lack of perfection.

    It’s a damn good roster.

On top of that, his deadline deals made them more viable for playoff success.

What else do you want here?

  9. Good. I’m not saying that Dubas is perfect but he has done a really solid job (along with Pridham) at finding ways to get creative. If Dubas moves a bigger salary piece to create better options that doesn’t negate his ability to find value bargains on top. I think they need a new coach. I’m not even 100% sold on them trading any one of Nylander/Matthews/Marner. The return should dictate what they do.

This free agency period is dog shit. So unless the trade is one that significantly bolsters other aspects of the lineup you don’t benefit from freeing up cap space getting cheaper players THIS YEAR.

I’m really tired of Reporters believing something. Report or be quiet.

kyle dubas IS the Toronto maple leafs at this point. give this man a blank cheque and a job for life.

  12. BornIn67

That is disappointing. When you look at the complaints about the team after the last loss they are all directly tied to Dubas’s philosophy on what wins. A philosophy that is surely discredited enough now to move on from it.

  13. riko77can

Too little too late? At the presser Dubas said it’d be a family decision as he expressed how difficult this past year has been on them. Then when answering a question about what he’d do next he tossed in a “maybe that’s not for me”. Ouch. Sounds like he’s gone.

  14. Drummers_Beat

Dubas despite his small flaws has been an amazing GM for this team. It is undeniable that he built a great team, and coaching staff and otherwise can’t get the job done.

This failure is not on him. Not even close.

  15. DrMansionPHD

He’s under 40 and improved the team despite dealing with a cap nightmare.

He’s incredibly talented as a GM.

  16. HEY-REVEEN

Honestly never should have left him hanging with no new contract for this year, was an especially cheap/petty move from a team that doesn’t need to be cheap and honestly hasn’t had a halfway decent GM since Pat Quinn until Dubas took the reigns. Would’ve been nice to give him some measure of job security so he wouldn’t have had to go hard all in this year dumping away picks because his job was on the line.

Personally if I was Dubas, I’d walk for that insult alone. I hope he doesn’t (though that’s mainly because I worry about what old boy’s club retread they bring in to replace him), but yeah.

  17. Honestly this was the impression I got from his presser today. Him talking about discussing with family made it sound to me like initial discussions around framework have taken place and he just wants time to make a decision. Him openly expressing Leafs or nothing was a show of good faith that he is not going to leverage other teams or explore other options.

I’m just a dumb monkey on Reddit though.

  18. irkybirky

GM’s are not a dime a dozen. Dubas could possibly be the best Leafs have had in 20 yrs. If he’s like Lou, he’ll age like fine wine

  19. OzzieNewYork

Dubas is too weak to do what’s necessary. And that nepotism is so minor league. Let’s move on from this 7 year experiment that ended in abject failure. Unless you are proud of Marner’s 28 game point streak.

  20. Bobbyoot47

They certainly can’t just keep rolling the same group of people out year after year. This year they lost five out of six home playoff games. That’s terrible. Last year they lost game seven to Tampa on home ice. The year before they lost games five and seven on home ice to Montreal.

They damn well better make some changes.

  21. TheMannX

Dubas’ decisions are the reason Toronto is where they are, and they will never change so long as he is there because he is, at heart, an analytics geek that has never, and will never, figure out the unmeasurables that separate a team that is good on paper and wins regular season games from one that wins Cups.

He needs to go. Frankly, that entire front office needs to go from Shanahan on down, and replaced with people who do understand those realities, and those people need to commit to either making Matthews and Marner into consistent playoff performers or shipping them out of town ASAP.

Keeping Dubas just means more first round outs until the above facts are obvious. He’s had five chances to build a contender. He’s zero for five. He needs to go.
