Should the Maple Leafs extend GM Kyle Dubas? What could the future hold for the ‘Core Four’?

Despite the lack of playoff success during his tenure, should the Leafs extend Kyle Dubas’ contract? The ‘Core Four’ of Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, William Nylander and John Tavares once again came up short in an elimination game for the club. Is change on the horizon? What does the team need to do next? TSN’s Director of Scouting Craig Button joins Jay Onrait to discuss.

  1. He was wrong five years ago, and he's still wrong today. Let him go and bring someone in that'll be a little tougher at the negotiating table and someone who has more hockey knowledge. The best teams are balanced

  2. I think there's growth to be had Dubas has grown and learned he has to make changes to succeed. The Tavares situation is one that needs to be figured out to try to move forward there is plenty of FAs that can fill out the roster this year.

  3. Get rid of Marner, offer mathews less or trader him. keep the rest (keefe, dubas). Leafs are otherwise fine.

  4. Out of the past 5years the Leafs made the playoffs, this season they had the best shot to contend because they went all in and shipped out pretty much all their draft picks for a bunch of rentals, also they played against the team 'they wanted' in the Panthers and lost. Their window is gradually closing because their top players need extensions soon and that'll eat up more of their cap. If Dubas doesn't stay, then Keefe will get the axe. There's no scenario where the Leafs keep everything the same going into next year and run it back…

  5. tbh, the most toxic part of the Leafs franchise is actually the media. Their bombarment-style of coverage and over-analyzing 24/7 is toxic af.

  6. Hell YES. Look at the team he assembled. Don't dare to put this loss on him. Changes can be made at positions under him.
    Like the Coach etc.
He deserves another Contract under the circumstances.

  7. Team is too soft. And for that matter, why the heck was Simmonds not in the lineup?! They need some toughness.

  8. The GM that commanded the Leafs to their first playoff series win in 20 years should be rewarded by getting fired. No, seriously. If this is an intellectually acceptable topic in Ford Nation, after a decent season where the Leafs finished in the top 25% of the league … then YES, maybe it is best to get away from stuffy Great Lakes intensity, and go work for a sun belt team where there is less unfair slow-news-day scrutiny.

  9. Absolutely not, and I'm not even a Leafs fan! The Leafs need to change their direction. Bring in a GM and Coach with some playoff pedigree.

  10. It's on Dubas that the Leafs had to go with their 3rd string goalie. He gambled hard on Sammy/Murray and got burned on it! Woll might be their future #1 but you have to gradually bring him along during the regular season, maybe at most as a platoon goalie. Sammy is an RFA, so they have control on his next contract. Murray has to be rid of. Muzzin's career might be over with, so what are the Leafs gonna do to replace him(if he was healthy, he would have been a great impact on the back end in the playoffs)? Dubas is not the right GM to address these issues.

  11. Other than his goalie fiascos (Mirazk and Murray). I guess he did alright. it's not really his fault when the big 4 couldnt produce in the playoff. I still think he overpaid Tavares though.

  12. Dubas is a tool…the core 4 are soft…coach and front office are incompetent…Leafs have huuuuge problems

  13. Canadians, relax. They’re a pretty team that got beaten by a better, more powerful team that had presence, were plugged into everything going on. Tkachuk, Barkov and a very deep 9, a deep defense, and Bob in form won. Panthers dominated forecheck and neutral zone…NO ONE stopped the cats through the neutral, they entered attack at top speed.

  14. FIRE DUBAS. His wimp-ass "vision" is a failure; he's capped the team out and neglected defense and goaltending. An extension for this fool would result in more years of playoff disaster. FIRE DUBAS. The fact that Dubas wasn't fired the morning after the team's elimination worries me; it suggests we'll have to suffer through a contract extension for this incompetent GM, whose "vision" has met with playoff failure over and over.
