Pettersson should've been 1st overall pick in this year's draft and should've gotten same hype as matthews and mcdavid. This kid is that good.
Gotta love it, not only does Benning know what guy to take but he knows what guy the other teams are pinning for. That's why you try to trade down only one spot and still get your guy plus an extra pick. McPhee was too smart to go for it tho.
Both Benning and Marc Bergevin were being absolutely roasted 18 months ago by anyone and everyone. I heard some hockey people talk about Benning like he had Down's Syndrome and now look how great the Canucks' future is. Bergevin's Pacioretty's trade, Galchenyuk trade and drafting Kotkaniemi look like truly inspired moves. This is why it's hard to take hockey people seriously when they criticize GM's. Except of course for Peter Chiarelli who really is utterly useless.
I like how Benning uses the people around him. He doesn't appear to have a huge ego and seems really easy to work with.

Seemed like Jim was deciding on picks on the fly and not going off the draft list his scouts worked hard to create.
A little late to the party but if you think about it if we traded down and drafted Petey 6th overall we could've ended up using Vegas pick for nick Suzuki

0:06 Now we know the incredible wisdom by Benning behind this decision. He knew the Rangers were looking for Pettersson and so he didn’t want to move below them. It sure payed off.
Ah I wish it was true about Jim saying day 2 was the day they clean up. Instead they used two picks that never even really played for team. And when you see what was still there it just stings when you can't get a rostor player out of a top 2nd round pick
