Tempe Votes No, Throwing Coyotes Future Into Doubt

The Tempe Entertainment District is not happening. The city voted down all three of the proposals and now there is a real chance that the team moves.

  1. There is no chance the Coyotes stay in Arizona. Zero chance, actually.
It's been 27 years of failure and financial losses.
    It's over.
Just move the team to Houston and create an instant central division rivalry with the Dallas Stars.
Move the Colorado Avalanche to the Pacific division.
Houston Coyotes, or Houston Aeros, both good team names, take your pick, it makes no difference.
The franchise would prove to be infinitely more successful with a move to Houston.
Stay away from Atlanta, as NHL hockey has failed there twice already.
And any yahoos out there who seriously think the NHL would move the Coyotes to Quebec City are probably on hallucinogen narcotics and/or need to get their heads examined by a team of neurologists.
Quebec will never get another NHL team, ever.
    And neither will Hartford, either.

  2. Why don’t they play where the Suns play? Plenty of teams with dual purpose arenas, but obviously would assume that it would be a massive project to the facilities but still

  3. At this point just take the hint Bettman, Arizona doesn't like hockey move the Coyotes to somewhere that wants a team and where the league wants a team.

  4. If they get moved, I am torn if the NHL should try and set them up in Houston or take a risk and put them in Kansas City or Salt Lake City to grow the fanbase. For the sake of the Yotes org, I think it would be best if they went to Houston, where there are enough people to support them. KC and SLC would do better under expansions (I would think).

  5. Sold out 18 000 people in Videotron Center in Quebec. All Tickets are at 34-39$ wich is 5$ more than the cheapest ticket in Ottawa. It would be sold out every night is NHL tickets in Quebec city were the same price as Ottawa even a bit more.

  6. I don't it's impossible that they move to Quebec City. I can see the NHL wanting to milk as many money as possible from Houston via expansion money. I question if the NHL would feel as motivated to invest in a small market through expansion, rather than through relocation. Relocation just seems like the safest bet for Quebec City, and the scenario that the NHL would prefer the Nordiques to return through. It also wouldn't surprise either if Houston expansion and a Coyotes relocation to Quebec happened simultaneously. It would kill two birds with one stone.

But, if the team does move to Houston, I really hope they revive the WHA Aeros. That would be great for the history, and would be amazing for more new age retro branding, which everyone loves.

  7. If the coyotes are forced out of AZ, what do yall think about them being relocated to Jacksonville Florida?

The city loooovesss their ECHL franchise and Is constantly selling out games, so I don't think there would be an issue filling out the arena. The city is also the largest in Florida with a bigger population than Miami and Tampa combined, so that would be a huge market, and it's only an hour from the georgia border so you could reach fans in that state. And lastly Jax only has one major sports franchise, the Jags, so they need some company lol.

  8. I like the Yotes. I hope something works out somehow. The unfortunate thing is this has largely been a failure of ownership/management being unable to draft, sign, and trade well. And that's going back a while.

I don't care what city you're talking about, it's the possibility of winning that drives attendance. Whether it's actually realistic or not… ack-ack-hmm-Toronto-ack-ack… isn't the point. The point is you have to be able to sell people on the idea that winning is possible. Do that, you sell tickets. If you sell tickets, and there's excitement around the team, these arena deals seem to find a way to get funded. Don't have any realistic hope to sell people on for long enough, and the fans won't show up, and neither will the voters and/or corporate backing.

  9. Question is does the Houston rocket owners want anything to do with the nhl. If he says no then I don't think there is another building for the coyotes. Problem with Kansas is the building is first pretty old and second owned by the city so that is whole other quagmire to go through.

Salt Lake owner ain't the richest as far as sport owners go so we will see where that goes. Portland building is owned by a trust so pretty much a no purchase over there.

San Antonio and Milwaukee looks to be wild cards in all of this. Cleveland is brought up but if it ain't going well for Blue Jackets not sure if it is smart move to do it again in Ohio. Atlanta… Do they have a building?

Then that leaves the dead last choice of Quebec. I won't say it is 0% chance. It is the last choice if everything above falls through.

  10. Houston seems like the best fit. As a blues fan a rival in KC would be epic, but i believe that failed once before? Quebecs jersey was my absolute favorite growing up. Ended up being a sakic avs 19, but would of been quebec had they stayed. Really wish theyd get a team back, but i dont like the idea of expanding past 32 teams, any more than that i feel will start to water down the talent, to where there would be a team so bad it might not win 10 games. 32 seems to me the perfect number.

  11. Why not move to Tucson? were building in population plus we have the roadrunners their farm team they can use are convention center plus they played a pre season game here

  12. The only reason why the Yotes even have an owner is so the owner can hold a sportsbook license in AZ (through the team). Let the bum go since it's clear he has no reason to make the team competitive (look at how many dead contracts they have just to make it to the cap floor) and move the team and let an owner who cares about making the team a cup contender have a shot somewhere else.

  13. As much as I would love for the Coyotes to move to Quebec, it doesn't make sense for the divisions. But I think the desert made it very clear that hockey won't work there. Its sad for the few fans the team had, but when you struggle to fill a sub 5000 seat arena… Keep the team together and move the franchise.

  14. Being from Houston and desperately wanting a local NHL team to root for I'm torn on this. I hate to see a fan base lose their team. Especially when it seems the fans genuinely cared but were given a raw deal by issues beyond their control. I'll be thrilled to have a team in Houston but saddened by the fact it's a relocating team.

  15. If I on the Phoenix coyotes, I’ll tell Arizona goodbye you can thank your councilman for not letting us build a new arena, but we’re moving to Kansas. I think they do really good in Kansas and just change the name of the team. I think the phoenix coyotes should have a fresh new start, and move to Kansas or Houston with a new name new logo that be the best thing for them

  16. Shannon I think if Arizona couldn't find a deal the #1 option should be Houston due to idea of maintaining balance of 16 in each conference and division by geographical location and besides Dallas and Coyotes have past that is intertwined bordering on rivals which would definitively become another sport in Dallas vs Houston sports rivalries currently including Football, Rugby, Baseball, Basketball, Soccer, ultimate frisbee, and even e-sports just to name a few

  17. Not saying you are incorrect or that Quebec will happen, but there is an easy solution to that time zone issue. 8 divisions of four like the NFL, where Chicago, Detroit, St Louis, and Minnesota are grouped together.

  18. So sad to see this Coyotes team in trouble for decades. Meanwhile in Vegas… This isn't fair

  19. I'd imagine Houston would be the default move. Out of all the cities that could make an NHL team work and embrace a new building (Atlanta wouldn't embrace the building last time) Houston is the most populated, sports oriented, and wealthy of the list. While I personally would like to see Salt Lake, Kansas City, or Quebec get a team before Texas gets a second one I'd have to think after a failure they would make the move to the most likely to succeed. As someone not invested in the Coyotes It'll be interesting watching what happens.

  20. I know all Canadian fans got their fingers crossed Arizona will move to Quebec City….

  21. I am from az. Az sports needs a win in 1 of the major sport and I can die happy. Hoping for a good future

  22. It was going to cost Tempe $100,000,000 to do this project, when one in 1000 people watch hockey why the hell would they vote for it?
