Comment who you think won this trade? Quick reaction because I was streaming. We will talk about this trade more on the next podcast episode! Thanks everyone
Avs easily won this deal. Kaut isn't very good. If a team can fix Merkley its the Avs. Nieto played well for the avs.
Feels like an exchange of a couple of prospects that didn't work out on their previous teams. Kaut will have more of a chance at getting good ice time in San Jose. Merkley could be a turnaround the prospect for Colorado but the window is limited. The two veteran players being exchanged felt like more of a position-depth move.
As a Sharks fan, I'm happy with this. Merkley was never going to be a regular NHLer in our org, so there's no risk in moving him out. He wasn't going to be anything here. If the Avs can salvage him somehow, which I highly doubt, then more power to them. He hasn't shown to be coachable in any significant way, and at this point in his career, he's so far behind the curve in so many important areas, and didn't exhibit any real drive to improve on them beyond bare minimum at the AHL level (which wouldn't fly and hasn't flown in the NHL in his brief time up there), so there wasn't a future for him here.
So Nieto and Merkley's roster spot for Kaut, who might be better suited to our system, and a body to replace Merkley? Sure, I'll take that. Best case scenario, Kaut becomes a bottom 6 RW for us. Worst case, he doesn't pan out and we're no worse off. It's a very bland trade, and while some might think we got fleeced, this is a guy who was on most teams' do not draft list, and he's spent each year since being drafted more or less proving why that was the case, while also being underwhelming offensively, revealing his ability to process at high speed isn't up to par with his creativity.
I'm happy to see if Kaut can turn a corner.
Ryan Merkley was a 21st overall selection in the first round in the 2018 draft. He's from Oakville Ontario, I know the player had requested the trade, he's a Right shot D that's 22 years of age. I feel like sometimes if you are developing your young players besides having them sting in the AHL you are doing a disservice to them. That being said we have also lost all patience especially when it comes to Defensive players and how long they can take to develop. I think this could be a home run for the Avs if they keep him at a cheap deal beyond his ELC. I like this move for Sakic and Grier gets something for a pending RFA.
Colorado had become a machine for making these type of defenseman successful. If Colorado sees something in Merkley I trust they know what they’re doing.
