Zack Kassian traded, Duncan Keith retires, and the NHL Draft

It’s NHL Draft just wrapped and the boys are back with a brand new episode of Oilersnation Radio to help you make sense of what’s happened with an hour of all things Edmonton Oilers. On today’s show, we looked at the Zack Kassian trade, Duncan Keith’s retirement, Reid Schaefer at #32, and a whole lot more.

To kick off the Friday episode of Oilersnation Radio, we got started with a look at the Zack Kassian trade that happened on night one of the NHL Draft and whether or not it was a good move to make. Do we care about the draft picks that two and three years down the road? From there, we looked at Duncan Keith retiring after one year with the Oilers, freeing up $5.5 million in cap space that will be crucial to improving this team moving forward. With Kass and Keith both gone, the Oilers now find themselves with $20+ million in cap space and we looked at how Ken Holland should prioritize this windfall. Should he start with a goalie? Should they look for upgrades on defence? From there, we looked at Reid Schaefer who was selected by the Oilers at 32nd overall and whether it was a solid pick for them to wrap up the first round. Lastly, we closed out this week’s podcast with another round of Ask the Idiots and our Hot and Cold performers to wrap up what was a very busy week in the NHL.

  1. Strome gonna be cheap and we can get away from throwing a thin bag at him cause he loves connor

  2. Don’t forget, with the Oil being better now, 2&3 round picks are closer to 3&4 rounds.

  3. I'll admit, Murray is more intriguing if he is saying he'll waive to go to TO/ EDM. At least he's saying he wants that type a smoke!—can handle that type of pressure—so hmm okay for two years, if Ottawa retains a couple million I'm interested…this of course hinges on the fact I have a little faith in Skinner. He's the piece that needs to become great, would love to build a great goalie within, as many cup winners do. Rodrigue still has a shot too babies

  4. For your rule changes suggestion? I fully disagree.
It’s the 30 year olds who have been franchise guys for a decade. It’s the 30 year olds who have put fans in the stands for a decade. It’s the 30 year olds who are going to guide your young rookies.
No. They are the foundation of most franchises who don’t get to have a Crosby or a McDavid. I really don’t think it’s them who should be getting contract restrictions. Instead limit younger guys. Let them only be allowed two year contracts. And unless you’re in top ten statistical categories ( stats that actually are beneficial to the team), then you’re not allowed to sign for more than 3.5% of the cap until you are 30 or have 700 games played.
