This topic’s been one that’s kind of been hiding in the shadows so to speak, as no one really talks about it, yet it’s one that I do believe has some value to discussing.

Let’s go over Dennis Cholowski, his rocky development path thus far with the Detroit Red Wings, and the uncertainty behind his long-term future with the team.

Heck, let’s go over his short-term future too, as the Red Wings are going to experience more defensive competition than ever before, with the additions of Jon Merrill, Marc Staal, Troy Stecher, and potentially Moritz Seider.

  1. Big fan of cholo I think he plays when there is an injury of the top 6 than proves himself being on the 2nd pp and figures his d out. I like him and offense like that from the blue line is tough to get.

  2. Nemeth is in his last year with Detroit. If Cholowski has any chance it will be in 21-22. He may not be in the Wings system long term, but he will be given more chances… and probably end up as a AHL injury call-up guy for whatever team(s) has his rights.

  3. It almost seems like the red wings have placed all of their defensive issues upon cholowski. Throw him out there with merrill and let him produce points

  4. Like Athanasiou, Cholowski does not seem to have all of the intangibles necessary to be a truly complete player in the NHL. Its a head-scratcher whether he will "get it."

  5. In sports as in life, people don't usually become someone else. If Cholo was going to become
assertive, it would have happened already.

  6. Personally I think Cholowski could benefit from a change of scenery and coach. However it's not like the team are sitting with their eyes shut and not trying to impress upon Cholowski what he needs to improve in his game if he's going to cut it in the NHL. He's definitely got talent, but he's really in danger of fizzling out and being labelled a bust. TBH I see him being exposed to the Kraken In the expansion draft and they could very well be tempted to take him as his upside is still high despite his travails so far…..

  7. He might need someone older and more experienced to toughen him up and give him the confidence to really go for it and play aggressively

  8. He has his upside, and his down. After this year I could see him maybe slotting into a 6 top role being that 6th guy. But I think he could be exposed to the draft and a new scenery may help him. Kinda want it to work out tho with the wings, but they I can’t see him getting any major ice time this year with the addition the wings made.

  9. Now doubt cholowski has deficiencies in his own end, but his development I put on the organization. Both of the last 2 seasons he made the team outta camp and then regressed. And in both those seasons he was hung out to dry. 2 years ago the d-corps was ravaged by injuries and had to start the year with 4 kids, last year was a historically awful year, not exactly a good situation for a young dman. And something about detroits development of prospects doesn't sit right with me. For 2 decades developing prospects just didn't happen, we just signed free agents. The last decade, the theme was overripe b4 getting a shot at the nhl. And in those overripen years, there was alot guys who failed to live up to expectations. Hronek is the only prospect in the last 5 years to make the team full time, with zadina joining him this year more than likely.
I think the organization has to high of expectations and then the kid is ruined. Meanwhile you look around the league and theres always young guys thriving once given the chance. It's about putting a kid in a position to succeed and letting the kid play his game instead of trying to change him into something he's not. It seems to me as a red wing fan, that every other team is better at seamless transition of prospects to the nhl, good team or bad. Ottawa was and is horrible, bright spot for them a few years ago was chabot, not the best defensively, but they let him do his thing, develop and drive the offense. Take a contender in a cap crunch and they plug a kid that they drafted in the 4th round, on the 3rd line successfully. Dont get me wrong, don't want the kids to be thrown to the wolves and expected to be the saviors of the team like Edmonton a decade ago or anything, but come on. I hope I explained it decently, I cant be the only one who notices that something just isnt quite right. It's a catch 22, kinda like a young person fresh outta university with a degree, but no one will hire you because they want experience, well how do you get experience then?? Its the same thing, blashill wants kids to come in and play like a veteran, if he cant, he's not ready. Well Jeff, all these veterans where inexperienced kids once, how did they become veterans?? By playing!!!!!!
    My rant is done.

  10. Make him a left wing. He has more NHL points (16) than these fellow 1st round draft picks selected ahead of him…….Logan Brown, Michael McLeod, and Kieffer Bellows.

  11. A 22yo kid struggling on a team going through a total rebuild, shocking I tell you, shocking. We need to cool the jets on DC. He's shown glimpses of a solid NHL defensemen, he's just been extremely inconsistent. Inconsistency can be worked on with age. Zero chance I'm giving up on him.

  12. Reminds me of Haydn Fleury. All the talent to play but none of the grit or fight required. Under Rod, Fleury has really turned his game and his fight up a notch and is finally making an impact overall in the NHL regularly. I see a way forward for Cholo, he just has to reach for it.

  13. He needs stability staying in gr for a few years to develop without being pulled up. The stability will allow him to develop. When he's going back and forth between gr and Detroit, he isn't getting the reps he needs. The only reason he made the team out of camp the last 2 years was injuries to key guys. A good season or 2 in grand Rapids will help, just staying there and showing his assertiveness there. That will at the very least give a better idea of whether or not he will make it in the nhl.

  14. his -46 in 88 games and overall poor defense and lack of snarl can go plan somewhere else , dudes a bust .

  15. what i’ve noticed a lot as well is that he turns the puck over so much in the defensive zone, even the couple games i went to in gr he was struggling with it

  16. Cholowski is just not an NHL caliber defender. Unfortunately I think he's a life-long AHL'er for some depth in the future. Would love for him to prove me wrong tho…
