  1. Good show today. After listening to Brendan Shanahan I think I agree with Hus that Dubas was indirectly bargaining during his presser. I have corporate experience at the management level. Dubas had a deal on the table that he had responded favourably to, but not yet accepted. Then he went to this presser and said essentially that he didn't know if he wanted to return as GM. That must have been a surprise to Shanahan and that's a BIG NONO! Shanahan did not want him to attend the presser in the first place and reluctantly agreed after Dubas insisted, but he should have honoured the wishes of his boss without argument. Then a few days went by with no commitment from Dubas and he had his agent submit another proposal to Shanahan. I think it was at this point that Shanahan probably decided he had a flake on his hands and decided to fire Dubas. Dubas' email to Shanahan that night probably also contributed, although we don't know what was in it.

There comes a point when you have been with an organization for many years and you feel increasingly comfortable, perhaps part of the family and you start testing the boundaries thinking you are invincible. It's just at that moment when you believe you are in charge of things that you get your ass fired. You don't see it coming but it stings like hell. Trust me, I've been there. Mr. Dubas is only 37 and made a classic mistake that lots of other former managers have made. He tried to play Mr. Shanahan, with whom he had a close relationship and you do not get away with that king of thing when it's your boss. Shanahan did the right thing and he covered himself by checking with his superiors before he informed Dubas. When Shanahan showed up at Dubas' office with the bad news I'm sure it was a total surprise and right about now Dubas is still stunned and feeling like he got hit by a freight train. This situation may not bode well for him going forward. That's my take.
