Things are about to go from bad to terrible really quickly

  2. buzzeddimitri

when you lose the guy you’ve trusted the last 5 years of your career with, along with a mentor like Spezza, I don’t think anyone would be in good spirits in that organization rn

  3. Sunbear94

And now the implosion happens of front office resignations and players refusing to re-sign happens. Back to the good ol days of middling teams that most years don’t even make the playoffs.

  4. RichRingoLangly

What a message Shanahan sent to Matthews, who we have to resign. It’s crazy.

  5. TheLoomingMoon

The move was to fire Shanny, and Keefe. Going to be real interesting to see what happens this season

  6. TheCarrier89

Ugh, this is starting to feel more and more like the bad old days.

  7. JRocleafs

It’s going to be VERY interesting moving forward.

Either this will be the best thing that’s happened to the organization or the absolute worst, there is no in between.

  8. booomdynamite

If we actually lose 34 because Shanahan got fucking mad at Dubas I might actually not watch this team.

We let ONE guy, ONE, dictate the future

We should have just needed a re tool. Not a re build.

  9. Adept-Blood-5789

Shanahan is gonna look like a bigger goof than Dubas.

  10. 22Skidoo11

Were they as unhappy when they imploded in the 2nd round? This team and entire organization needed a shakeup. This seems like a first step.

  11. l0vetog0lf

Who cares what the players think. They were a part of the reason Dubas is no longer here lmao

  12. Volderon90

Well that’s what happens when you have 7 years when you don’t win despite having great rosters. Change is inevitable.

  13. ironfunk67

Disband this cursed team. Start fresh in a few years as the St.Pats or something new.

  14. JFMoldau

I’m not willing to say that shit is fucked.

But if I see articles next week of Matthews and Nylander refusing to talk to the organization about their contracts, I won’t be surprised.

Remember, even though they’re both under contract and can be traded before July 1, no GM in their right mind is taking them without assurances that they will re-sign with their new team, effectively granting Nylander and Matthews veto on any trade.

  15. Choptober_

I honestly don’t care. Anyone upset can go. What’s gonna happen? We fail worse than we have failed.

This team lost in the playoffs to Columbus and Montreal. It took moving heaven and earth to win one round and even then Tampa who was at their worst gave them everything.

  16. Flare_Knight

Well yeah. Dubas hired most of these guys. Of course they wouldn’t be chipper about him not coming back.

Oh well. They can try to work with whoever comes in next or they can get out. That’s sports for you.

  17. Ellicrom

Honestly, I’m with Shanahan’s implied message that if you’re not here to win, then goodbye to you. If this shake-up disgruntles people enough that they want to leave, then how committed are they to the Leafs?

Side note: many people are out here criticizing Shanahan for firing Dubas with 5 weeks left to make decisions on some big contracts, and saying he should be gone as well. News flash: the role of the president is to *steady the ship during changing times*. Shanahan has been at the helm for a while now and has as much of not more ownership over the Leafs’ office than Dubas did. He also has his own relationship with the players and will undoubtedly have a hand in the negotiations going forward. Let’s see how this plays out before y’all start flipping tables.

  18. bucajack

Everyone in this sub has decided to turn into Chicken Little today.

I love Dubas and this core. And it sucks how it all went down. I would have re-signed Dubas but it was an emotional choice. Deep down we all kind of know these guys just ain’t it. They’re like the Sharks from a few years ago with less success.

At the end of the day these guys have proven they are losers when it matters. I love the team and the players but seven years is enough. How many times have they just fucking folded? How many times can we run it back? Maybe the problem is that they had a GM who was more like a buddy? I don’t know but we all fucking can tell they don’t have that extra gear.

I am watching the Last Dance now. Do we have anyone with 1/10th of Jordan’s desire to win? I don’t fucking think so. And it fucking sucks.

If you don’t want to win here then get the fuck out. It’s the Muskoka crew all over again.

If you told me after Matthews first season that we would be here, I wouldn’t fucking believe you.

  20. Kind of a sidenote, but to all of those who think the staff in the front office and management staff will not affect player’s decision to sign:

Börje Salming was a guest on a swedish tv show a couple of years ago that was all about his journey as a hockey player, a lot about TML, and he **cried** when speaking about all the people who worked “behind the scenes” and how much they meant to him during his time in Toronto and after.

    They definitely matter a lot.

  21. Matrix17

If they’re so unhappy they should fire Shanahan and reverse the decision

Fucking do it MLSE you cowards. Otherwise the fans are bouncing

The players are probably next. Imagine blowing this up right before a few of your stars are supposed to sign UFA contracts? Holy fuck what a disaster. They’ve truly lost their minds

  22. KeepingItBrockmire

The idiots who wanted to blow up the core four are quickly going to find out just how lucky we have been the last six years.

  23. Para5yte

Maybe we should be firing the MLSE board of directors instead, I don’t have the energy for a rebuild so soon and this all but guarantees it. Anyone who thinks this was a good move or that it’s still a wait and see thing, I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you. Hope you enjoyed Matthews because he’s gone and I doubt the others stay when he jumps. The mouth breathers who barely watch won and they can keep the team, I think I’m done with them.

  24. Due_Entertainment_44

All this on the whim of Shanahan’s personal sense of pride.

  25. NikAntagonist

I liked Dubas. But if everyone has been ultimately let down and disappointed with how the team has performed then he is the guy who put it together.

Seems weird to say “this food has been disappointing for years. Compliments to the chef”.

  26. Redneckshinobi

I think this will finally do it for me as a fan. I am confused as to why now and not the season before? I know a contract year, but this is going to age poorly in my opinion. I liked where the club was going honestly. Spezza’s gone, that’s a fucking shame.

  27. powerclipper780

What a fucking dumpster fire piece of shit organization. I’ll never not be a fan, but i have no illusions about them ever winning during my lifetime

  28. jehumphr07

They’re upset that there was a shakeup at the top after they’ve flopped in the playoffs for the last several years? if the players are upset then maybe they could have shown that on the ice anytime against the Panthers. Or in game 7 last year. Or against Montreal….

  29. lingodayz

Ehh, there’s a lot of over reaction going on right now. While it’s not pretty, things will blow over. There’s way worse orgs in the NHL. This isn’t as dysfunctional as the media makes it out to be. It’s highly reactionary driven by emotion, things will be fine come Oct.

Hilarious thing is that it’s buried all the news about the playoffs. You’d think it’s already the off season.

  30. Coolsbreeeze

He gave everything for this team to succeed I think a few execs have short term memory in not remembering how it was when the Leafs didn’t make the playoffs. Maybe that will happen this year and Shanny can be fired.
