Habs Trade Chiarot to Panthers for Smilanic and Two Draft Picks

I like what Montreal did here. The playoffs will tell us whether this trade is a winner for the Panthers.

  1. Loved having Big ben on the habs. Came to play every night and always spoke well with the media. Panthers fans are going to love his physicality and the nasty edge he brings in the playoffs

  2. MTL keeping 50% salary (thus the 4th rounder I assume)
I'm surprised so many people didn't think Chiarot would get a first round pick. I thought not only was it 100% sure, there would also at least be a prospect. The market for D is stupid. I think MTL could even get a third (maybe a 2nd…?) for Kulak.

  3. I think Florida, might have "overpaid ". The reason I am saying that is because Florida has no first-round pick for the next two years. This can hurt them real badly if they do not end up winning the cup. This means, they will lose a few players during the offseason and they will no longer be able to add top tier prospects unless they trade for first-round picks. This is a 100% steal for MTL.

  4. Chiarot is a nice pick… and the Panthers are going absolutely ham. Well they need everything they can against the likely Canes matchup.

  5. The panthers are in a world of hurt next year, they have 10 unsigned players, Yandleโ€™s dead cap jumps 3.05 million to a total of 5.391 million (they have a total dead cap of 6.575 million next year), Barkovs contract jumps 4.1 million to 10 million and Verhaegheโ€™s contact jumps 3.166 million to 4.166 million, thats 10.36 million being added on top of what was already there before. The only help is with luongoโ€™s 1.092 million coming off the recapture penalty. If they want giroux like people still think they do they would only be getting by with LTIR space. Also Patrick Hornqvist will be turning 36 with a cap hit of 5.3 mill (January 1st birthday is pretty cool though.) Mason Marchment will also be a lot more expensive then almost league min

  6. I think it's a great return for Montreal. But to say Montreal "won that trade" is a stretch. Something that people are forgetting is that Ben Chariot AND Aaron Ekblad both didn't play for the Panthers last year in the playoffs. The Panthers are +75 in plus minus and just got a massive boost on the blue line. While Montreal may have the won the trade, but it's quite a few years before Montreal is impacted at all by this trade.

  7. You gotta mortgage future while your core at their prime. Iโ€™m in Pittsburgh and Iโ€™ve been able to enjoy 6 cup appearances and 5 cups wins because of it. Once the core is done itโ€™s done. But be middle stay middle.

  8. I think this is a good deal for both teams. Florida paid quite a bit with that first-rounder, so I think Montreal got the edge on this deal, but I hope Chiarot steps in and finds his way….should be somewhat easy on that Panthers squad!!

  9. Florida gave up way too much for Chiarot just like the Leafs did with Nick Faligno,
โ€ฆ the same bad move. Chiarot can walk away at seasons end,
โ€ฆ the same bad move like the Leafs made with Faligno!
Florida will get the same bad results just like the Leafs got w/ Nick Faligno!

  10. 3 assists that 'most likely' will not even become impact players in the NHL, for a legit Stud playoff defender? = Win for Florida IMO. It is not that it is a bad trade. But ya, a First rounder, even if basically a 2nd in Florida's pick would have been a MUST for Chiarot. He will be a beast again this year come Cup time! And that is what it is all about – Winning Cups! I was born a Habs fan; But I am a Sen's fan as well; Ya I know …. lol So we can love a team that has no chance; But every team needs to eventually try for a cup right? Is this not our hope as fans? Florida is doing this! Good for them I say! Chiarot with Ekblad? OMG! Good luck this year Panther fans. You deserve some for sure!

  11. As a habs fan this is more than we could really ask for. Was gonna be happy with just a 1st so getting even more is great

  12. The big determination of win/lose of this trade is not so much how this season ends, whether or not Florida wins the cup, but it will be more determined by the end of next season. Florida's first rounder coming to Montreal is unprotected, so in theory, if Florida falls off the earth next season from a deep playoff run/stanley cup this season (much like the habs did this year vs last) that first rounder could POTENTIALLY turn into Connor Bedard…. Likely? No. Possible? Absolutely.

Florida rents Chiarot until the end of this season, Montreal get a Prospect in Smilanic, Whoever they take in the 4th round this year, and maybe, just MAYBE Connor Bedard.

  13. This pick could and has the potential to being a very high pick if Florida doesn't win enough games and misses the playoffs
