OLIVER MOORE, VELENO SUSPENSION, & SHANAHAN’S WRATH – Winged Wheel Podcast – May 22nd, 2023

Between the 2023 NHL Draft fast approaching, the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the IIHF World Championships, and overall chaos across hockey, there’s lots to talk about!

Tune in as we start by discussing Joe Veleno’s unfortunate stomp on Nino Neiderreiter and subsequent suspension & whether this affects his Detroit Red Wings standing whatsoever (3:40).

Next, an NHL Draft Prospect Profile on one of our favorite potential Red Wings picks: Oliver Moore from the USNTDP. Tune in as we break down the speedy center’s game, his offensive ceiling, how he compares to Dylan Larkin, & whether he’d be worth picking over Ryan Leonard, Dalibor Dvorsky, Zach Benson, Matthew Wood, & others in Steve Yzerman’s eyes, the potential to trade picks, & more (9:15).

After that, an update on the Conference Finals as Tkachuk and Bobrovsky shock the Hurricanes to give the Panthers an early lead, & the Vegas Golden Knights taking a strong start over the Dallas Stars (26:15).

Also, Brendan Shanahan’s shocking 180 to ultimately let go of Kyle Dubas, what the Toronto Maple Leafs’ shakeup means for Detroit & the rest of the Atlantic division, what happens to Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Tavares, & others, Andlauer potentially buying the Senators & whether that could be a Dubas landing spot, & lots more from that chaos (39:40).

Finally, more quick updates on Hockeytown’s presence in the World Championships (Kubalik, Seider, Raymond, Berggren, Maatta, Mazur), notes on Ken Daniels’ recent accolades, & Calgary’s interest in Alex Tanguay (53:00) before we take your questions during Overtime (56:52) – enjoy!

  1. Ridiculous – the minute he went out and told the media he wasn't sure he wanted to still be GM – there is nothing you could do – What was Shanahan supposed to do – go to bat for him with the board after all the 1st round exits – and then he goes out to a press conference – and says I'm not sure I want to do this ? That is insane -Dubas is not nearly as clever as he thinks he is . Lets hope Yzerman keeps the leafs # on speed dial .

  2. Strengths
    Skating & Speed.
    Compete & Work ethics.
Defense game & Shooting, not bad at all as he often hits where he aims.

    Work on
Slow play down. He only has one mode today and it's 300% full speed, which are his strengths also in Skating & speed.
Puck distribution. Play easier and distribute faster when you are Center by playing slower & more safe in your own zone, as first touch and knowing what to do next, less turnovers.
Strength as with all young people at this age, it comes with time.

    NHL ready?
Not yet, and a pick like he is, they're obviously good for RW as we don't need him today. He still has an opportunity to manage to take a place, however I don't give him high odds on that in the next camp.

Oliver Moore is like an exciting bottle of red wine with a lot of character and extreme high flavors. With such a shallow mix, it's probably best to give it time to aerate well before consuming it.

  3. I wonder if it would make sense to try and trade for pick 12-14 BEFORE the draft with our pick 17 and second rounders as capital. You would be securing two of what should be about 4-6 guys that we have been discussing as possibilities. Wonder if it would be cheaper to do now before a guy slips and now you may have a bidding war in a trade market and pay significantly more at draft time.
Edited to capitalize BEFORE the draft for the context because you addressed the possibility of moving up from 17. The Penguins used to do their trade deadline acquisitions about 10-14 days before the deadline and seemed to pay less in some cases and controlled their entry into the market a little bit more.

  4. Zadina, the 17th, our highest second this year, Shai buim and a second next year for Keller
