[Dreger] There still seems to be a good amount of speculation swirling around the possibility of Doug Armstrong as a GM candidate in Toronto. High ranking source close to the Blues says, “all of this talk seems to be fabricated”.

Lol, so in other words the speculation is nonsense and this is a non story. Thanks dregs

I’m going to wager MLSE has had talks about who would replace Dubas should he not continue as GM. I’d go as far to say these talks were had last summer when the negotiations started.

Has Dreger ever actually had good news to share?

This week has solidified the idea that I want to change my career to hockey insider. Tweet absolute nonsense quoting non-existent sources every 6 hours for a handsome salary.

Just say that Doug Armstrong isn’t a candidate then and never was? We all know that Treliving is the most likely candidate to be hired here

This reminds me of when Burke came to the Leafs. He was under contract with the Ducks and everyone claimed it was just fabricated rumour. It would never happen. Same with Babcock

Truth is everyone wants a shot to run this team. It’s a dream job despite what some media and redditors claim.

Idk why anybody was speculating about somebody under contract with a different team and basically right in the middle of a retool.

  8. Well no shit eh! Guys under contract still. Jesus fuck we suck as a collective whole for clicks these days.

Lmao I swear it was Dreger and his colleagues who floated his name

    Lol…Hot off the presses:
“All of the rumours we put out there regarding the Leafs are fabricated.”

The entire Doug Armstrong to Toronto storyline comes from Friedman saying something along the lines of “wowee wouldn’t it be super cool if they got Doug Armstrong?!”

And within a day he was on everyone’s list and the media was discussing whether he had an out clause in his contract because he loves Toronto

  12. Intelligent_Chair901

Out of all the dinosaurs that are being rumoured here I could live with Doug.

Why would Doug come here? He is currently GM and President of Hockey Ops in St. Louis with full autonomy. Why would he come here to Toronto if Shanny and the board want final say on all moves and he is just a figurehead?

  14. As a Blues fan…

Doug Armstrong seems like the most obvious name for the media to blindly link with the position. He’s from Ontario, he recently won the Stanley Cup and he’s the current Team Canada GM… seems like by far the most obvious name to just put out there.

I just don’t see how Armstrong would make any sense for you guys.

The Blues had goaltending issues for years. It was only resolved when Armstrong was literally forced to call up Binnington because Allen and Johnson were playing so badly, and Husso wasn’t great in the AHL. I say forced because the Blues had explicitly told Binnington he didn’t have a future with the organisation a few months earlier. He isn’t a GM I think is great at resolving a goalie issue.

Matthews and Marner extensions looming? We lost Pietrangelo because, in part, he refuses to give NMCs. He was overly stubborn with a nonsense restriction that he gave himself. Would be weird to target a GM that you’re going to ask him to immediately change his negotiating philosophy.

Finally, the defence hasn’t been great since losing Pietrangelo. The Scandella extension was stupid, then the Krug and Leddy signings were questionable at best. I don’t see the overall quality of the Dman going up.

I do think Armstrong is one of the better GMs in the League, but he is overly patient. He’s unlikely to walk into the Scotiabank Arena and immediately shake things up. He took years to resolve our LHD issue, waiting until he could leverage the JBo situation in Calgary. He took years to resolve our C issue, waiting for Stastny to be a UFA and then leveraging the ROR situation in Buffalo when Stastny didn’t work out.

He’d get you a damn good coaching staff though, and a rigid philosophy to make you tough to play against.

There may have been something to report on but there isn’t anything to report on?

    Thank you Darren

Mathews for Binnington, Doug Armstrong,1st and a 2nd. Who says no

  17. waldoorfian

Or it was an intentional trial balloon to see what Stillman’s reaction would be.

  18. JohnYCanuckEsq

Dreger and fabricated talk is an iconic duo

  19. BORT_licenceplate27

How many GMs straight up quit another GM job to join another team. This seems insane to even consider him an option when he’s a GM of another team and there’s no sense of him being on the hot seat. He’s straight up not available
