NHL CHANGING DRAFT LOTTERY PROCESS? Detroit Red Wings GUARANTEED TOP 2? Lafrenière, Byfield, Stützle

NHL Deputy Commissioner and Chief Legal Officer Bill Daly recently sent out a memorandum to the 31 National Hockey League teams regarding the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, and in it contained some really interesting information as to what the NHL is proposing. There’s a lot to uncover, but the main point I wanted to discuss in this video lies in how the NHL is proposing to change its draft lottery process; changing it from three lotteries for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, to only one lottery for 1st overall this year, and this year only.

As a result, it would put the Detroit Red Wings in a position where they are guaranteed either the 1st or 2nd overall pick. With this in mind, who do they take? Alexis Lafrenière of the Rimouski Océanic in the QMJHL, Quinton Byfield of the Sudbury Wolves in the OHL, or Tim Stützle of Adler Mannheim in the DEL, and Moritz Seider’s old team?

The draft is stacked with guys like Alexis Lafrenière at the top, with Quinton Byfield, Tim Stützle, Lucas Raymond, Alexander Holtz, Jamie Drysdale, Marco Rossi, Cole Perfetti, Jake Sanderson, and Yaroslav Askarov rounding out the top 10. The rest of the draft has a ton of great talent as well, like Anton Lundell, Kaiden Guhle, Dawson Mercer, Braden Schneider, Dylan Holloway, Hendrix Lapierre, Connor Zary, Justin Barron, Jack Quinn, John-Jason Peterka, William Wallinder, Rodion Amirov, Jacob Perreault, Seth Jarvis, Ty Smilanic, Jeremie Poirer, Noel Gunler, Mavrik Bourque, Lukas Reichel, Tyler Kleven, Ridly Greig, Justin Sourdif, Shakir Mukhamadullin, Jake Neighbours, Luke Tuch, Helge Grans, Jan Mysak, Michael Benning, and Antonio Stranges.

The current NHL Draft Lottery odds, go in order as the Detroit Red Wings, Ottawa Senators, San Jose Sharks (Senators), Los Angeles Kings, Anaheim Ducks, New Jersey Devils, Buffalo Sabres, Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks, Arizona Coyotes (Devils), Minnesota Wild, Winnipeg Jets, New York Rangers, Florida Panthers, Columbus Blue Jackets, Calgary Flames, Vancouver Canucks (Devils), Nashville Predators, Toronto Maple Leafs (Hurricanes), Edmonton Oilers, New York Islanders (Senators), Dallas Stars, Carolina Hurricanes (Rangers), Pittsburgh Penguins (Wild), Philadelphia Flyers, Tampa Bay Lightning (Sharks), Colorado Avalanche, Vegas Golden Knights, Washington Capitals, St. Louis Blues, and Boston Bruins (Ducks).

  1. It’s shady to me that they keep changing how the draft goes…
Pick a format and stay with it for fuck sake!

  2. We trust in Steve y for god sakes we have a Street named after him in Detroit. He’s very very loved here in Detroit and Michigan. The man can fuck off and no matter what we got his back. He’s done a lot for Detroit by bringing us Championships when are other teams can’t.

  3. Honestly, this is how the draft lottery should work. The worst team is guaranteed a top pick (as they should be) and no team that barely missed the playoffs can end up with a top 3 pick. Everyone's happy. No team gets insanely lucky and is gifted an amazing player, no team gets screwed over.

  4. I also read Yzerman has his sights on D man Jake Sanderson who will play for North Dakota in 2021/2022 which could be a potential to play along side Seider. I also read if they don't get the first that Tim Stutzle is on radar. We may have faith in Yzerman, but this season was a let down. Yzerman really needs to get a new coach. The only good trade was Fabbri.

  5. If we don't get Alexis Lafreniere

Tim Stutzle may be given a look as news have surfaced, but it wouldn't make sense why we would we pass on high caliber goal scorers as there are much more talent in a point perspective
I wouldn't be surprised if one of the following gets drafted if they don't get Alexis

Seth Jarvis from Portal Winterhakws has 42 goals and 56 assists this year

I personally have my sights on Marco Rossi from Outtawa 67s who has 39 goals and 81 assists and has more points than Lafreniere.
    other good offensive choices

    Cole Perfetti 37 g74 a 111 pts
    Jacob Perruault 39 g 31 a 70 pts
Jack Quinn 52 goals 37 assists 89 pts
    Carter Savoie 53 goals 46 A and 99 pts

If no one picks these two kids up for D Yzerman will

    Jake Sanderson
    Jamie Drysdale

Wish NHL would hurry back on and the lottery draft selection at least gives us better sights haha

  6. In regards to the comment about trusting Yzerman… having grown up bleeding red and white, seeing the 97 cup and beyond, Yzerman has been at the forefront of it all. When he left to become gm of Tampa, I followed and like Tampa, because of Stevie Y. Knowing the heights he took Tampa to in a salary capped NHL, by all means, i trust his judgment. He has the luxury of interviews with the picks, and getting a chance to read their mindset and take a look at work ethic that I don't see as an outsider. I do know he is a great hockey mind and will absolutely do what he feels is best for the club.

  7. They don't want Ottawa to win the top 2? I don't like this change, in Franchise Hockey Manager it will be impossible for me to win the 1st pick with a 1% overall chance, which is what I did in my first season of managing Vancouver after I had traded my way up to get Buffalo's first overall pick. They finished like 19th, and I won the draft, I was sitting there waiting for my pick and realized it was mine I got Lafreniere, whom I later traded for Byfield. Now I have Byfield and Stutzle.

  8. I like all three top prospects and they’ll help immediately. We still need defense and a goaltending. We’re still a long way out. Unless Stevie Y spends some big money in free agency

  9. As a Wings fan, it is an interesting point that you bring up about how Wings fans will never question and always support Stevie Y. Seems to the fans, the GM usually functions as a lightning rod for fans to lash out against when things go wrong, criticize his decisions. But to WIngs fans, Stevie Y's words are practically gospel; if he makes a decision that we disagree with, even if he makes a decision that doesn't seem to be working, we just figure, "He knows hockey better than we do, and if I disagree with him, I'm probably wrong."

My question is how these picks are going to get them back in and contending again. I grew up in the 80's when Detroit was horrible, almost as horrible as they are now. But after drafting Yzerman, they got piece after piece of what they needed to become a contender and then a favorite. If you look at what they have now, both active and potential prospects to enter the mix, they're actually pretty loaded up front – Larkin's the guy to build around, Mantha complements him, Bertuzzi is getting better and better, and Veleno and Rasmussen will develop into top-six players (or hopefully at least one of them) and Zadina will be the 2nd real star forward (along with Larkin.) Goaltending is meh now, neither Howard or Bernier are gonna bring another cup and there's not much in the system to think about, but the thing about goaltenders is you only need one really good one- Maybe someone comes through the farm, maybe a good draft potential comes up in the next few years, or maybe if the rest of the team gets good, we can snag a starter through a trade or free agency. But the blueliners are the big problem to address. I'd argue that out of the active defencemen, only DeKeyser belongs in the top 4 of an NHL team, and even he's more of a 3rd or (preferably) 4th guy. In the system, we have Seider who yes, will be a top line guy, but he's only one piece. Cholowski's played a bit in the NHL now and doesn't seem to have the potential that we thought, neither does Hronek. And there's not much else there. So adding Lafrenierre, Byfield, or Stuetzle would definitely add another tool in the forwards rotation, it doesn't address their biggest deficit right now. Unless we're considering picking one of these guys to trade for some very prospective defensemen, but that just isn't the Red Wings way- What made Detroit the dynasty that they were was getting good prospects, developing them in the farm programs longer than most other teams would, and then reaping the rewards of the investment.

  10. Frankly ,I don't know what your trying to prove by not taking Lafreniere if you have the chance other than you might have balls of steel and a tin brain to match !

  11. Ken Holland was amazing at his job. The man won 4 stanley cups and didn't miss the playoffs for 25 season.

  12. Changing the rules so close to the draft is suspect. Detroit is guaranteed a 4th that is more than fair compensation. It is called a draft lottery for a reason. It should stay the same this year.

  13. Hope the NHL keeps the original draft lottery system (albeit with PPG% ranking criteria kicked in there). Changing the system mid-season would be unfair to teams higher up in the standings. As a Sens fan, it would be great to have the new system in place but I believe the integrity of the sport is paramount and keeping it intact for this year (as much as possible) is the only choice the league has. That said, changing the system for the next year, i.e., once the season is done, would okay in my books.

  14. Didn't realize you've officially joined the fandom. Welcome! I've liked your videos for a few years now, so I'm looking forward to seeing more content relating to the Wings.

Part of the reason the fanbase trusts him so much is because of the resume he's built over the years. He built those Team Canada teams in 2010 and 2014. He was a huge part of revitalizing the Tampa Bay Lightning. He's had so much success in front office roles that the fanbase has a lot of confidence in him. In terms of how he'll handle the draft, I was initially more critical of the Seider pick, and there were quite a few other fans who were as well, but not only has it turned out that Seider is a stud, the Wings have had quite a bit of a shakeup in terms of their amateur scouting, which gives me more confidence moving forward. Tyler Wright (who I wasn't a fan of, personally) left last year to go to Edmonton, so Kris Draper has taken over as the director of amateur scouting. Wright very often went for players who didn't necessarily have high offensive ceilings but played well-rounded, defensively-responsible games. I wasn't a fan of his philosophy, personally, and blame him for the lacklustre results at the 2015 and 2017 drafts. Kris Draper, based on his interviews, has a very different philosophy, and I think it's more in line with modern trends in player talent evaluation. So this is the first real chance to see what Yzerman can do with new blood in charge of their scouting.

  15. I think you might be too young to remember how popular Yzerman was back in the 90s and early 2000s. He was the no. 1 athlete in Detroit sports for nearly 2 decades.
