If you look at the Colorado Avalanche defensive unit, you really like what you see. With names like Cale Makar, Bowen Byram, Devon Toews, Samuel Girard and Josh Manson, all the Avs really need to do is fill one spot.
But…moves could be made this offseason and we keep hearing Sammy G could be one of those guys moved to make room for a much needed 2C. And what about Devon Toews. Extending him is likely a priority, but what if they are too far apart on a number? Do the Avs make the decision to move him now?
So maybe the defensive side is not as clear cut as we think. So who could the Avs be looking at in the UFA pool for d-men? We take a look.
We also give Erik Johnson his season grade. Could this be the last season grade we give him?

No, no, no, no, a thousand times no. If you're the Avs you do not go into next season with either Malinski (who may be close, but let's see how he does in a full pro season first) or Merkley (who has serious gaps in his game) set to take a permanent role in your top 6 in the NHL. I wouldn't even trust Behrens in that role and he's better than either of those two but going back for his junior year at DU. They need to have NHL ready D set for at least the top 7-8 slots.
Id grade EJ at a solid B+ to A-, hes just soo smart and consistent as a stay at home defenseman.
C: I didn't get a chance to vote, but EJ had to get a grade as low as Hunt or lower…EJ didn't get a goal in the regular season and couldn't keep up or skate with most of the top 3 lines of the opposing teams. He has the intellect but his body is failing him. If he could learn (like Cogs did) how to change his game he could be serviceable at a lower price.
