Benning Wanted Philip Broberg INSTEAD Of Vasili Podkolzin @ 2019 NHL Draft (Canucks Rumours & News)

We reviewed this idea a few days ago in our video talking about the Vancouver Canucks and internal disputes with management and the scouting department, but I wanted to make a full in depth video about this topic, because the implications are quite interesting. According to J.D. Burke on TSN 1040, Jim Benning apparently was pushing really hard for the Vancouver Canucks to draft Philip Broberg at the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, and only acquiesced into the scouting department’s suggestion of drafting Vasili Podkolzin because Broberg had been drafted by the Edmonton Oilers two picks beforehand.

Hi. I’m “Gio Palermo”, also known as “legorocks99” (“legorocks99Gaming”, “LR99Gaming”, or “LR99”). I post video game commentaries on YouTube revolving around hockey, with a primary focus on “Vancouver Canucks”, “Montreal Canadiens”, “Detroit Red Wings”, and NHL top “prospects” topics. I enjoy making these videos and I hope that you enjoy watching them!

I am also a student at the BCIT Radio Arts & Entertainment program, and this YouTube channel is an essential part of my 2020 BCIT radio portfolio.

  1. I understand why the Canucks didn't do a draft day video (even though it was in Vancouver) Too much drama

  2. Bring this back in 5 years. I believe Podkolzin is going to be great and Broberg may be a top pairing defenceman but you never know.

  3. Don’t let Brackett go pls Jimbo is a good GM but Judd doesn’t go against the cap so why would u let him go?

  4. Hey Lego,
How was it like when you took the radio arts &entertainment program at BCIT? I'm planning on possibly taking it next fall. Also, glad we choose Podz instead of Broberg~

  5. And dude you are such a moron! Virtanen was a pick made by the organization NOT Benning. Aquilini wanted a hometown kid. It was Benning’s first draft and he went with what Aquilini wanted. As for Juolevi, the whole organization wanted a defensemen NOT Jim Benning. We hadn’t drafted a D in the 1st round since 2005. We literally wanted to trade the 5th overall pick for PK Subban if Dubois fell to us. We had no intention of drafting a forward. The organization wanted a D. And Juolevi was ranked the BEST defensemen in almost every mock draft, including TSNs.

And you are such a hack. Points don’t mean anything. Broberg advanced stats in the SHL are extremely good. They were better than almost every single U19 player in the SHL, including Holtz, Soderstrom and Hoglander. Broberg’s eNHL rating was also extremely high. I would still take Pod over Broberg because we don’t need any more offensive defensemen. But Broberg had a solid D+1 year. Definitely better than Soderstrom. If your analysis of Broberg is just his point totals, you don’t know anything about hockey.

  6. Glad our Habs' GM Marc Bergevin and his chief scout Trevor Timmins co-exist harmoniously. Unfortunately, their draft record together aren't exemplary, so far.

  7. Broberg isn't exactly lighting it up in Sweden (being an offensive defenceman). Poz isn't either but has upward momentum which is exactly why he is rated higher at this point. Both are NOT yet ready for the NHL so either way Canucks fans would have had to wait. Vancouver really needed more defensive prospects so not surprised they had hoped Broberg was the answer. Turns out they have no room for Poz right now anyway up front so having a guy like him in the wings makes the future bright as well as makes things exciting currently. The best of both worlds. I'm happy with Poz and no we don't need a one-dimensional d-man like . . . let's say Justin Schultz. Remember how the Oilers won him over (Vancouver was in the running) and they screwed him up. They will screwup Broberg too.

  8. You can't say you would have drafted Podkolzin because of how well he has played since being drafted. That makes no sense.

  9. I think their first choice was zegras though. I heard that they were targeting two guys and podkolzin was one of them, I assumed the other was zegras, but maybe they assumed Zegras would be gone and their two guys were broberg and podkolzin.

  10. as an Oiler fan, I have to say that Broberg has looked brilliant in our camp so far. Not sure on Podkolzin
