Yesterday we finally got Bob McKenzie and TSN’s final draft rankings for the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, taking a look at all the top prospects and ranking where they fit in for the draft. Now, TSN’s draft rankings are always the most interesting, mostly because they aren’t just a product of one guy’s opinion. Instead, TSN’s rankings are formulated by interviewing actual NHL scouts, and forming a consensus around all of their opinions. This makes TSN’s 2020 NHL Draft Rankings, perceivably, one of the most reliable lists out there, due to the correlation between the list itself, and the potential opinion of real NHL teams.

With that being said, we had our usual one, two, three starting off the list, with Alexis Lafrenière of the Rimouski Océanic, Tim Stützle of the Adler Mannheim, and Quinton Byfield of the Sudbury Wolves. However, in the explanation paragraphs before the list itself, McKenzie reveals the rankings of some of these prospects among the scouts interviewed.

It turns out some scouts legitimately have Byfield as the 6th overall prospect. Darn.

Bob McKenzie’s List: https://www.tsn.ca/bob-mckenzie-s-final-ranking-lafreniere-the-surest-thing-in-most-uncertain-draft-year-1.1488272

The draft is stacked with guys like Alexis Lafrenière at the top, with Quinton Byfield, Tim Stützle, Lucas Raymond, Alexander Holtz, Jamie Drysdale, Marco Rossi, Cole Perfetti, Jake Sanderson, and Yaroslav Askarov rounding out the top 10. The rest of the draft has a ton of great talent as well, like Anton Lundell, Kaiden Guhle, Dawson Mercer, Braden Schneider, Dylan Holloway, Hendrix Lapierre, Connor Zary, Justin Barron, Jack Quinn, John-Jason Peterka, William Wallinder, Rodion Amirov, Jacob Perreault, Seth Jarvis, Ty Smilanic, Jeremie Poirer, Noel Gunler, Mavrik Bourque, Lukas Reichel, Tyler Kleven, Ridly Greig, Justin Sourdif, Shakir Mukhamadullin, Jake Neighbours, Luke Tuch, Helge Grans, Jan Mysak, Michael Benning, and Antonio Stranges.

The current NHL Draft Lottery odds, go in order as the Detroit Red Wings, Ottawa Senators, San Jose Sharks (Senators), Los Angeles Kings, Anaheim Ducks, New Jersey Devils, Buffalo Sabres, Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks, Arizona Coyotes (Devils), Minnesota Wild, Winnipeg Jets, New York Rangers, Florida Panthers, Columbus Blue Jackets, Calgary Flames, Vancouver Canucks (Devils), Nashville Predators, Toronto Maple Leafs (Hurricanes), Edmonton Oilers, New York Islanders (Senators), Dallas Stars, Carolina Hurricanes (Rangers), Pittsburgh Penguins (Wild), Philadelphia Flyers, Tampa Bay Lightning (Sharks), Colorado Avalanche, Vegas Golden Knights, Washington Capitals, St. Louis Blues, and Boston Bruins (Ducks).

  1. People in the comments seem to be agreeing with the 2 rather than the other 8. Don't forget people, NHL scouts surveyed 80% have him at 2 or 3.

  2. He was invisible at the wjc. That being said a GM will take him 2 or 3 cause SIZE and truculence.

  3. I love Byfield but it’s not crazy to think he could fall out of the top 5. Tbh (and I hope someone calls me out for this cuz I’d love to discuss it) I don’t really understand what separates a Tim stutzle from guys like Raymond, Rossi and Perfetti? Cuz I see them all on the same tier of talent a long with Byfield

  4. I think byfield is too big for the game nowadays…is probably gonna be like another laine… have a couple of 70 points seasons at best and be a 50 point player for most of his career

  5. Byfield is already 6'4 and is expected to get to 6'6. Could be very injury prone if someone hipchecks him in the knees. I have him 5th in my ranking and have Rossi and Drysdale ahead of him.

  6. I'm confident Byfield is a top 3 pick, but on a personal level, I just have a feeling Rossi or Perfetti might sneak in there. But if you look at the lottery probabilities, if the Sens are #2 and #3, don't rule out them selecting Stuzle and Drysdale, the Kings may look to move on from the big guys in their changing of identity, so yeah I could see Byfield slipping to #5/6. Imagine a one two punch of Hughes and Byfield..

  7. Guy doesn’t sim well or grow in gm mode, I’ve changed he’s potential to franchise still doesn’t grow cpu or active gm

  8. I used to doubt my own assessment of draft prospects with, "I'm not a scout, what do I know?", but over the years, I've developed a track record and I've since learned to be more confident of said assessments. With that, I'm more in line with these outliers on Byfield. I'm not saying Byfield is bad, but I have players like Stutzle and Rossi ahead of him. If this sounds insane to you, you need not look very far in draft history, where players were projected, where they got drafted, and how these players panned out. The same size that people think makes him a shoe-in for an NHL star is the same size that has given him the advantage over these young kids he's played against. That advantage is mitigated at the NHL level. However, my track record is not 100%, nobody's is. It'll be interesting to see how this pans out, but isn't that the draft every year? Take care.

  9. Kid has the biggest upside in the draft…but getting ranked 6th by a scout in an insane draft like this is not crazy. There are like easily 7-8 players with superstar potentials in this draft, at least they did not rank him 8th. I mean most people were ranking Perfetti 8th of the top 8 and he was ranked 4th by Bob McKenzie. Holtz fell to 9th behind Sanderson, which I believe is a mistake. Sanderson does it belong in that super top 8 that includes Holtz at the bottom

  10. I myself, as a Detroit supporter, hope to get 2 turns in the lottery to get to the Byfield team. Lafreniere is great, but Detroit needs a great center to lead the team because Larkin is not the leading center..

  11. Byfield is an amazing talent with amazing tools. But he hasn't put it all together yet. People scream about his size, yet hes not physical at all. Most of his offense comes from transitional play, similar to Jack Hughes. Its much easier to stop that type of offense in the NHL. Now, Byfield has all the tools to improve other elements in his game, and hes still 17. So it just adds a lot of "projection" for a player like this.

  12. Ok but they dont know Byfield enough 6th is way to low. Yes he is not physically dominant, and needs to improve but he is the youngest of all. If Sens get 2 I would want him over Stutzle, everyone wants Laf so why 6th?

  13. Consider that hes also only 17 years old and barely made the cut age-wise for this years draft. Hes 10 months younger than Lafreniere.
If hes producing at this clip at this age, then imagine him at the same age and XP as Lafreniere!

  14. maybe they got marco rossi over byfield or cole perfetti this draft is so deep with different play style some team may even have lundell over byfield

  15. I can definitely imagine some NHL teams/scouts, especially with an old school mentality, wouldn't be high on a big guy that doesn't play physically regardless of the skill & potential. Also there are scouts who over-values tournament play too.

  16. To be fair, 10 scouts is a very small sample size and it could just so happen that they interviewed the outliers. Obviously, if we knew who the scouts were and their track records, we'd also be able to determine whether to take their rankings seriously or not

  17. This guy is nothing else than Size I don't buy the hype, I take Stützle over him any day.

  18. Boy was this just a bunch on gibberish. Just rank the damn guys and not try to make something up about Byfield. Kings have #2 s they Take Byfield or Drysdale.

  19. At worst, Byfield is Gilbert Brule, or he may be Keith Primeau, panning out but taking many years to do it and on another team…or he may pan out into Ryan Johansen, a big guy scoring second line points. But he will do it I n today’s NHL where size has been the least relevant it has ever been.

  20. Byfield has some attitude problems that could hinder his development and makes scouts question weather he will reach his potential

  21. I am not sold on byfield. Hes a top 5 player in the draft id say but I think his performance in the world juniors hurt him a bit, i know he was was one of the youngest, but I think once he plays against men of his size its going to take him awhile. He has his entire life just been the bigger guy and been able to use his size to his advantage. That won't be the case in the nhl. He will adjust but he will finally have to make some adjustments to the pro game. I say 2 or 3 years in nhl and he will be great, I still just don't think he will be a malkin like some think. I dont see him putting up 80 to 100 points, I think his ceiling will be a 50 to 60 point player. Which is not awful by any means, i just dont think star player.
