What’s next for the Toronto Maple Leafs?

It’s been an interesting start to the offseason for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Elliotte Friedman joined NHL Now to talk about what’s next for the Maple Leafs following the departure of Kyle Dubas?

  1. It seems to me having the GMs job without final say is cumbersome and not ideal. Big decisions won't be easy.

  2. Leafs are a curse. You either lose the next series or losing in the cup final after beating them.
    01: Devils, lost cup final
02: Canes, lost the next series and cup final
03: Flyers, lost the next round
    04: Same as above
    06-12: no playoffs
    13: Bruins, lost SCF
    14-16: no playoffs
17: Caps, lost the next series
18: Bruins, lost the next series
    19: Bruins, lost SCF
    20: Jackets, lost next series
    21: Habs, lost SCF
    22: Bolts, lost SCF
    23. cats, lost SCF?

  3. Matthews cannot sign BEFORE July 1st. Why don't people understand this? He is eligible to sign an extension 365 days before his current contract ends.

  4. with Matthews without a doubt has a ton of skills BUT skills can only go so far. come playoff time he can't hit, he can't fight just give him a clean check he will fold like a sack of potato and or just put a guy on him an he is pretty much non-existent and same for the other part of the core 4 and you've won the series, just look at the leaf vs panthers series

  5. The Toronto Maple Leaf's are like Stan Mikita's Chicago Blackhawks, full of talent didn't play as a team and only won one Stanley cup. You build a team from the back to front.

  6. What's next is the Leafs will enter the dark ages. Without Dubas the team will unravel and they'll struggle to even make playoffs. Forget about winning even the first round playoffs anymore. All the pieces were there for a Stanley Cup but Shanahan blew it up.

  7. Hopefully the Maple Leafs can retain keep most of their guys for a few more years, I think they are almost there!

  9. Guaranteed the Shanahan era (not the Dubas) will be the biggest bust in Leaf history….and there is still time left.

  10. Anyone ever consider that the Leafs were not able to beat a Florida team that nobody else has been able to beat either? Florida is just on fire right now. Maybe its not that Boston,. Carolina or Toronto are bad but that Florida is just playing fantastic.

  11. Move on? I hope not….Trevling has won nothing….Bergevin….lolll…….There was a deal on the table. Dubas knew he was basically going to get re-signed since the trade deadline (when Shanny wanted to renew his contract). Dubas said he didn't want any distractions and wanted the playoffs to end. They eventually ended and Dubas wanted to speak to the media, which Shanny advised against. Dubas then mentions he's not sure if he wants to come back and used the family card. This was most likely all an effort to now demand more than what was initially agreed upon ($4M/year). A few days go by and Dubas tells Shanny he is good to go and that his agent will call him. His agent does call, but then asks for $6-$7M/year, 5 years and full autonomy with transactions. That was a drastic difference from the framework that was already discussed and essentially agreed upon. The "I'm not sure if I want to come back" was the first red flag. You need someone who is all in, especially this far in and when so many big decisions in a short period of time need to be made. Shanny then likely felt betrayed by the one guy he's gone to bat for when everyone was saying to get rid of him. Did the agent make a mess of this?

A mistake was made here. Was it Kyle Dubas agent, Kyle, Shanny? Dubas is someone I’ve always enjoyed listening to. He’s smart, articulate and often a lot more open than many of his more experienced colleagues. One of the brightest minds in the game. You will not find another like him right now. He cannot be replaced. I do not see anyone coming in and doing better. It is not too late to fix this mistake. The leafs have made the playoffs every year under his watch. The team has one of the best records in the league over the last 5 years. It just knocked off Tamp Bay this year and made it to the second round for the first time in over 20 years, Glass half full here. This team is good and getting better yearly. Fix this mess , you still have a choice….mistakes get made…learn from it……relax the ego…..fix it. Meet guys, come on, do what's best for the team right now. Kyle and Keefe have done a good job here…..wake up!!!

  12. That fact that the Leafs were surprised at their losing is amazing since building a team not from the Net out and Defense out is a recipe for disaster in the Playoffs and that axiom has been known for generations upon generations upon generations.

  13. Largest aav in nhl and only get a bridge contract is ridiculous…

  14. the fact that Shanny was going to re-sign Dubas all along until Dubas overplayed his hand makes me lose faith in him.

  15. If the Leafs want to hire the NHL Network's Jackie Redmond to work in their front office, I'll be planning next year's parade today! She is awesome!
