Today the Carolina Hurricanes officially matched the Montreal Canadiens offer sheet for RFA Sebastian Aho. Afterwards, the young Finnish centre posted a nice, heartwarming statement on Twitter about how happy he is to be coming back. It’s an interesting discussion we have here, and it mostly reveals how Aho used the Canadiens to get his contract done.

I don't see it as Aho using the Habs it's more of Montreal gave Aho what he wanted to screw over the Hurricanes owner, They make like 20 million dollars in revenue so it's not that the owner can't afford it it's just it really makes it annoying to the owner and he may end up selling the team if it isn't profitable enough which is already hard to make money when your revenue is that low
Carolina would definitely still be negotiating
Good perspective, Gio. And what are you talking about: all your videos have substance! đ
I was wondering if you were ever going to be doing a NHL franchise mode I think a lot of people would like I certainly would please reply Gio
And I love your comment about the rain; at least you donât record from your car. đđđ
Why would he sacrifice money which Carolina was willing to give him up to 9.5 million and sign the offer sheet which lost him money if he didn't want to be a hab? And the argument here is that it was because he wanted to get his contact done early? It doesn't seem right. I'm pretty sure Aho wanted to be a hab, but didn't want to hurt the Carolina Hurricanes owners and fans. That's why he said in the tweet that he always hoped to come back to Carolina. To not hurt the fan base or the organization because as the pannel from sportsnet said "if your star player signs a offer sheet with another team, it hurts. Gm's don't admit it but it hurts." That's why most players that's offer sheet gets matched get traded later on in their career. Look at the history. Everyone. Even the big stars like Shea Weber, Ryan O'Reilly, and even our very own, Ryan Kesler
He didnât use the canadiens, he really wanted to join KK and the promising young players in montreal but as Carolina matched he just cannot say he wanted to leave. He was tired of negociating with Waddell so at some point he didnât care about playing somewhere else
Aho did use the process to get the deal done. And OF COURSE Aho is going to strike a conciliatory tone in his tweet responding to the Hurricanes matching the sheet. He's there for 5 more years. And OF COURSE if the Hurricanes didn't match he would have written a tweet thanking the Hurricanes for his years there, then writing another saying how excited he is to be going to a cornerstone franchise of hockey. It's the Canes that got the poor end of this deal. No way in hell they're agreeing to that term any other way.
Carolina wanted him for 8 years no negotiations! Eventually he wants out, he told the Habs "I love your storied franchise, I'm stuck, let's work together to make this look good, you do me this solid and I'll sign a 7 year 14 million dollar per contract when I'm a UFA."
When Carolina matched he had to backtrack publicly, what else is he going to say? I hate it here and I wish I was in Montreal? Lol, nope. He is going to do his best with the window he has in Raleigh, but he and Kotkeneimi will be Montreal's first and second line centers in 2025. He didn't take advantage of Bergevin, if a player's best years are 25-32 he is going to be in a Habs uniform for those years.
I am not an insider I'm just using my imagination on the dialogue, but what do you think is more likely? Your scenario or mine?
That's okay ..He got paid what he wanted too ..Saved him leaving ..
Well Let's try Laine or Marner then!
that idiot aho tells mtl fans that he really wants to go to montreal then when carolina matches he says he never wanted to leave carolina, mission accomplished good riddensdidn't cost us a thing now he's ufa in 5 yrs if montreal pursues him afterwards i am no longer a habs fan and i hope other teams wont be as nieve as bergevin was
You should be old enough to realise that you should not believe everything you read, especially from a player that must return and play with his Carolina teammates. Will Aho buy them each a 2,000 dollar Rolex watch???? The Carolina owner is furious that Aho had signed the offer sheet 5 minutes after receiving it … Not hours or days but 5 minutes. The owner's perception is that Aho is a traitor for signing the offer sheet SO QUICKLY ……… . I suspect that Aho will be traded in 365 days + one
Is Aho an A-hole?
Real question
probably carolina ownership wanting so squeeze every cent out of the contract and aho not wanting to negotiate all summer
Wow Aho
You guys are absolutely hilarious. I can laugh for hours at the lies you tell yourself about your once-great franchise. Aho (his agent, really) used Bergevin to get the 5 year term Carolina was unwilling to offer. That's it. The idea that Aho was secretly longing to play in Montreal is laughable.
Aho was just saving face for signing an offer.
He wasnât worth 1st 2nd and 3rd anyways. If bergy really wanted him he would of offered 10.44. Just under the 3 first picks. Bergy ainât stupid. He forced car pay him more than they wanted to
Donât be so sure heâll stay in Carolina. If there is a chance of a lockout, the owner will try to get rid of him to avoid paying the bonus.Wealthy teams like the Canadiens will be takers. Thatâs how the Canadiens got Weber.
Did someone really believe Bergevin? Manipulate mtl medias and fans as always, management is trash and so is the team, stop the marketing trick
Screw the hurricanes
There will be bad blood between these teams
Does anyone here think that the right dollar amount along with two first round picks, a second and a third could get Laine to the Habs? Or are 4 first round picks the only way to poach Marner or Laine? If 4 is the magic number then which player would you add?
He WaNtEd To Be A hAb
either Aho or Carolina used Montreal but they were in fact used..Carolina got their man for less then would have had to pay if no offer sheet..other teams were scared off so it was played excellently by everyone except Montreal who were used and their offer was a joke anyways and now Carolina are free to trade him after 1 year and get the best they can for him at that time
Either way I don't think this is what Carolina wanted. Now, instead of paying Aho for the next 2 years, 8.5M spread out over this year and 8.5M spread out over next year, like they would have on a 'normal' 8.5M contract they are forced to pay him 12M today and another 11M come July 1, 2020. That's 23M in a calendar year instead of 17M over 2. Add on Marleau's signing bonus of 3M (which admittedly they willingly took) and the team will be spending at least 80M this year in actual money and an additional 10M come July 1st. That's 90M in 366 days for a team that has not spent anywhere near that. It's very likely that was not the plan going into the off-season, and almost certainly does handcuff them in offering other UFAs who could have been available because they've far exceeded their budget for the year.
I do not think he would have done that, he just said that for public relations
Seriously? LOL
He was playing the habs… He's obviously just doing that so it looks better for him publicly.
Thank you Habs for helping us sign Aho.
Do you think marc bergevin did that just to look like he tried something? Maybe he's not finish with the rebuildđ€
he did nothing wrong, it was dumb for the habs to make it in the first place, as if the canes wouldnt match it.
