Let’s do this! The Cult of Hockey podcast. By the Faithful and for the Faithful, tonight with Bruce McCurdy and David Staples. They dig into whether the Oilers should “Keep, hold or fold” with Kailer Yamamoto.

  1. Foegle was good in the playoffs…went to the like an, developing, power foward…keep him ( depth needed on all bottom lines.).

  2. I love Yamo… but injuries has taken away so much of what he use to be.
Time to trade him while he still has anything of value, because after this year he just might be Done.

  3. Here is some of the forwards in the nhl making 3 -3.5 million a year: Jeff Carter, Scott Laughton, Nick Paul, Kasperi Kapanen, Adam Lowry, Tanner Pearson, Joe Pavelski, I think I would take any of those guys over Yamamoto.

  4. The Nurse contract is a huge detriment to team cap space, but we are stuck with it and have to hope he can learn from Ekholm and potentially close the value gap. Ceci is a tough call for me, he was one of our best d-men a year ago and there is part of me that wants to see if he can get back to that player. It is hard to gauge what kind of interest or value other teams will have for Yamo or Foegele and also what players might show interest in coming to the Oilers on a one year value deal. Those two things dictate which way I go in a hold or fold. I would likely move on from Ryan, Shore, and Janmark.

  5. Kostin – Draisaitl – Yamamoto was an effective line in the playoffs; Nuge – Draisaitl – Yamamoto wasn't. You can't have three stick-checkers together in the playoffs and expect success unless they're all playing at the top of their game, which Nuge and Yamamoto weren't. Just having some of the bigger body young players into the lineup next season should help them out come playoff time whether they keep Yamo or not.

  6. He’s too small. It’s impossible to get past a defender when the defender picks him up and holds him there. He throws hits but never with the puck and that’s the problem. All defenders take the body and he is eliminated.

  7. On the matter of Tyson Barrie, because Nashville had so many games in hand when he was traded he ended up playing 85 games this season; the most in the league. That doesn't relate to anything. It was just an interesting stat I saw when I was looking up Barrie's points versus Bouchard's.

  8. I'd worry about giving Derek Ryan too much more ice time – at his size and age injuries would be a big risk factor with increased ice time – especially if he's on a top line facing better defence

  9. I suspect Nick Bjugstad will be up for a bigger pay-check, now that he's coming off a good season, is huge, and had no injuries last season – the big knock on him previously

  10. Nurse doesn't suck by any stretch…but he isn't worth 9.25 ..maybe 7 ish. I politely disagree any other team would take that contract on. Hes here for a few years at least either he figures it out or gets bought out or traded down the road with salary retained.

  11. 'Tis the season to make "blockbuster" trades with lower-salaried players. Something like packaging Yamo and Bourgault for Kirby Dach and a 2nd rounder. As a sweetener, might have to retain some of Yamo's salary for a year.
Can't beat Yamo's spirit, but he has not proven to be as physically robust as Theo Fleury or M. St. Louis.

  12. Time for Yammo to kick rocks. Guy should have 60+ pts and 20+ goals no problem playing in Edm top six. It’s actually quite remarkable he’s lasted this long. Yammo gets moved for nothing else other than cap.

  13. fold his ass. I like Yammi so does the players but the Oiler's could use more size and finish around the net.
Yamamoto gets banged up too much for long season and cup runs.
He's too expensive at his current production and is lacking experience necessary to complement the leadership core.

  14. I have never understood why people love Yamamoto. You love that he's small and underperforms? Love seeing that smile when he finally scores a goal after NOT scoring for way too many games? $3M for a mascot is way too much.

  15. Honestly they need a number 1 goalie and a decent right side defesman soup and stew in goalie will I don’t think be enough going forward tbh

  16. In addition Yammy is taking too many penalties. In the playoffs this year, 18 PIM, more than anyone else on the team next to Nurse and Kane.

  17. We got to many small forwards. Trade one for sure, and the Yamamoto experiment is done. I like foegele and Ryan. I hope kostin sticks around and bjustad. We have Holloway coming up this year. He's definitely ready to go. Let's go oil

  18. Think staples is out too lunchbif any team wants nurse at his current salary, zero chance they move him without retaining salary or tossing in a couple picks. Why would oilers even want to move him he’s a pretty decent second option he’s just overpaid by about 3 million per year

  19. Vinny D couldn’t handle the playoffs let alone the NHL, too much of an experiment for a team that needs solid D in my opinion, same said for the goaltending.

  20. If Ekholm was there at the beginning of the season they would have finished at the head of the the pacific division and hopefully they will now next year. Playoffs would have followed a different route. But I doubt they would have got the Stanley just because Soup and Stew this year aren't Bobrovsky. And I doubt they will be next year either. Stew is playing well for a rookie but can you imagine a matured goalie with Stew as back up playing with this group? Yamo is effective when fit but gets hammered over 82 games in the regular season. He's gone. The outcome that Ken comes up regarding Campbell is what I'm waiting for.

  21. The Oilers roster doesnt need to be changed….only the HC has to go. Yammo when used as an offensive dagger is an NHL player but when he is used in a checking role he is miscast and poorly managed. If the Oilers refuse to play him to his strengths then move him out to a Team where he can take a leadership role.
